Function:
Provides specialized nursing service in administering anesthesia to surgical patients.
Scope:
Impacts direct patient care for surgical patients within MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Essential Job Functions:
Determines an appropriate pre-anesthesia examination has been made by a physician, relevant tests have been completed and a thorough assessment of the patient has been performed.
Develops a plan of care based on assessment, interpretation, anticipated procedure and essential equipment.
Coordinates with appropriate health care providers.
Administers anesthetic agents and adjunctive therapeutics.
Monitors physiological responses and takes corrective action to maintain or stabilize the patient's condition.
Provides resuscitative care.
Records pertinent information on the patient's records.
Terminates anesthesia.
Provides patients with post-anesthesia care.

Required:
Degree requirements as defined by the Texas State Board of Nurse Examiners (TSBNE) for clinical licensure as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist.
Preferred: Doctorate (Academic)

LICENSURE / CERTIFICATION
Required:
All of the following:
Current State of Texas Professional Nursing license (RN).
Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist by the Council on Certification (or Recertification) of Nurse Anesthetist.
Advanced Practice Recognition as Nurse Anesthetist by the Texas Board of Nursing.
Preferred: American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS), ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification as required by patient care area.
MAY BE REQUIRED: Authorization for limited prescriptive authority by the Texas Board of Nursing.
