Discover your future at Berkeley Lab!

Berkeley Lab’s Advanced Light Source (ALS) has an immediate opening for a Computing Project Scientist. As a Project Scientist, you will work on the development and application of user software for big scientific data acquisition, management, reduction, analysis, and visualization as part of a Department of Energy sponsored Data Task Force Pilot Program. This multidisciplinary position requires highly developed analytical and quantitative skills, initiative, independence, and team leading skills to critically impact the achievement of ALS organizational goals. As a highly resourceful team player, the ideal candidate will apply their initiative and judgment in accomplishing effective resolution of complex situations in a dynamic, multiple-priority driven, fast‐paced, and demanding environment with rapidly changing priorities.

The ALS is a dynamic national scientific user facility that provides thousands of scientists from around the world access to bright beams of x-rays, infrared, and extreme ultraviolet light for scientific studies and technology development in disciplines spanning physical, chemical, materials, biological, energy, and Earth sciences. The ALS has been a global leader in soft x-ray science for more than two decades and is currently undertaking a new project (ALS-U) that will endow the facility with state-of-the-art x-ray capabilities. It's an exciting time to join our growing team!

The core values of the Advanced Light Source (ALS) reflect a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. We seek candidates who will support a culture in which the entire ALS community feels welcomed and valued.

What You Will Do:

  • Develop software tools for data analysis, visualization, and management as part of a larger, shared software ecosystem for light source user facilities at multiple national laboratories.
  • Contribute to a national team that enables research in several emerging areas of synchrotron research, including areas such as X-ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy, Ptychography, and Tomography, with an emphasis on developing high usability tools for users.
  • Provide training resources, including documentation, manuals, and tutorials of software tools for users.
  • Present work and results at scientific meetings, and travel to multiple synchrotron facilities throughout the world.
  • Collaborate and engage with a diverse, multidisciplinary group, including ALS Leadership, Group Leaders, and other key stakeholders.

What is Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics, computer science, physics, or related fields; a minimum of two years or related experience; or equivalent work experience.
  • Experience in the collaborative development of open-source software.
  • Strong experience with object-oriented programming and design patterns, Python, Git, and Linux.
  • Ability to employ sound software engineering methodologies.
  • Ability to remain cognizant of cross-Divisional and Lab-wide activities such that development and management of projects are aligned with the overall vision and mission of the Division.

Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with UC, Berkeley Lab, and DOE policies and procedures.
  • Experience with user interface development, particularly the Qt framework.
  • Experience with databases, relational and NoSQL (such as MongoDB).
  • Experience designing and implementing software systems of many different types
  • Experience with cloud infrastructures like AWS, GCP, Heroku
  • Experience with containerized deployment (Docker, Singularity, etc.)

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled, however for full consideration, please apply by close of business on August 14, 2019.

Notes:

  • This is a full time, 2 year term appointment that may be renewed to a maximum of five years and that may be converted to career based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
