The Mortimer B. Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute at Columbia University brings together researchers from different scientific disciplines to transform our understanding of the mind and brain. In this highly interactive research environment, laboratories work together to gain critical insights into human health by exploring how the brain develops, performs, endures and recovers. The Zuckerman Institute is housed in the Jerome L. Greene Science Center, an architectural masterpiece on Columbia University’s new Manhattanville campus.

A new lab at the Zuckerman Institute seeks to hire an Associate Research Scientist (ARS) to lead virology research. The ARS will contribute to the lab’s research in two ways: (i) by engineering viruses needed for neuroscience experiments and (ii) by managing day-to-day aspects of the virology facility. Primary scientific responsibilities of the ARS will include: producing viruses, performing molecular biology work, and maintaining cell cultures. Additional responsibilities will include: managing virus and DNA stocks, developing standard lab protocols, purchasing equipment and reagents, monitoring financial budgets, establishing project milestones and tracking research progress. The ARS will also be responsible for overseeing trainees (postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, undergraduate volunteers) and other research personnel.

Minimum Qualifications

PhD in a discipline of the biological sciences, a minimum of 3 years of postdoctoral experience (ideally in virology-related research).

The ideal candidate will have expertise in virological techniques, next generation sequencing methods and analyses, transcriptional gene regulation, molecular biology and cell culture. Experience in project management outside of academia is also preferred. The ideal candidate will also be strongly committed to building the research and managerial infrastructure of a new lab.
