Epidemiologist / Health Services Research Scholar; Tenure Line
University of Utah Health - School of Dentistry
The School of Dentistry seeks to recruit a scholar of international distinction in epidemiology and/or health services research for a position as a full Professor in the tenure line. The appointee will design, lead and conduct studies focused on understanding (1) the effects of oral health on overall health, particularly in relation to chronic systemic disease and to aging; (2) patterns of oral health and disease in populations over time, and (3) the outcomes of oral care interventions per se.
Now in its sixth year, the University of Utah School of Dentistry is the first new dental school within a research-intensive university health science center in the US in recent decades. An integral element of University of Utah Health, the School has an already robust and rapidly-growing clinical network primarily focused on care for the under-served; a strong research program in several areas of distinction; and an outstanding predoctoral dental program and general practice residency.
The School is well-positioned to foster high impact epidemiological and health services research. As part of recent Medicaid expansion in Utah, the School is charged with assuring that expansion enables access to oral care for more than 50,000 adult patients throughout Utah. The School is unique in that it uses an integrated electronic health record (Epic, including the Wisdom module) that allows ready access to complete general and oral health information for thousands of patients. The Utah Population Database, the largest medical record database in the world available for public health research, is linked to the University’s health and payer records. Collectively, and in combination with the School’s clinical network, this capability creates a unique research opportunity in all areas of health outcomes that may be related to oral care.
A research team based in the School of Dentistry recently demonstrated dramatic and positive effects in outcomes in treatment for individuals in substance use disorder programs when they also receive comprehensive oral care. Building on this early success, the appointed scholar will have rich opportunities for research collaboration both inside the School and throughout the University. The UU School of Medicine (in particular, the Department of Population Health Sciences) and the Colleges of Pharmacy, Nursing, and Health each house care outcomes research scholars of distinction. University of Utah Health brings research scholars from these disciplines and others together through several administrative groupings and structures.
The School has dedicated space and resources available to support the creation of a research team. The appointee will be expected to devote the majority of their time to the development and oversight of an extramurally-funded research program focused on oral health outcomes. In addition, the appointee will also contribute to didactic instruction in epidemiology, health services research, care outcomes research, and related fields for predoctoral students and dental residents.
Candidates should submit current curriculum vitae along with a cover letter that summarizes teaching, research, and scholarly experiences. http://utah.peopleadmin.com/postings/95692
