Director of Scientific Affairs

ASTRO, the American Society for Radiation Oncology, is looking for an experienced science policy professional to develop and implement initiatives that promote clinical, translational and basic radiation research and maintain ASTRO’s position as the premier scientific society for radiation oncology.

As an innovator and leader, the Scientific Affairs Director must have experience in developing strategic partnerships and building relationships both internally and externally as he/she works with the Society’s volunteers, department directors, and Executive leadership to plan and implement Society activities related to the scientific priorities that support the Society’s mission and as directed by the Society’s leadership.  Externally, the Director will develop and maintain collaborative programs and good working relationships with the science policy staff of partner organizations, including federal agencies, professional societies, foundations, coalitions, and the biopharmaceutical and device industry.

The Director will provide scientific, technical and policy expertise and serve as a primary scientific liaison to internal and external partners involved in performing and promoting biomedical research.  He/she will be responsible for developing and implementing the Society’s strategic scientific priorities across the radiation oncology research continuum.

Some travel is required as well as occasional attendance at and/or support of ASTRO-sponsored meetings and events outside of normal working hours (evenings and/or weekends).

Job Responsibilities

  • Develops initiatives that promote clinical, translational and basic radiation research and maintain ASTRO’s position as the premier scientific society for radiation oncology.
  • Oversees the ASTRO grants and fellowships programs including developing RFAs in collaboration with funding partners, development of RFAs, awarding of awards, and post award management. Works closely with granting partners to promote grant opportunities and disseminate key research findings.
  • Develops and maintains collaborative programs and good working relationships with the science policy staff of partner organizations, including federal agencies, professional societies, foundations, coalitions, and the biopharmaceutical and device industry.
  • Staffs and provides thought leadership to the ASTRO Science Council, including the Science Council’s Leadership Committee and oversees the planning of Science Council committees’ meetings and activities to identify, develop and implement Society’s programs to meet the needs of the member researchers.
  • Develops and organizes the Science Council’s annual Research Workshop and other think tanks.
  • Disseminates the science within radiation oncology through ASTRO communications channels and outside partners.
  • Manages department staff who work to support ASTRO’s Science Council, providing both strategic and operational direction; builds strong teams, provides professional development and mentorship opportunities.
  • Provides scientific and technical expertise to the Society and staff concerning the development and implementation of national scientific and regulatory policies that affect radiation oncology research and its clinical application and promotes these priorities.
  • Advises the Board on key scientific issues and helps to inform the strategic plan that supports the Society’s mission.
  • Develops and oversees the budget for Scientific Affairs.

Qualified candidates will have:

Education/Experience

  • PhD, MD or other doctoral degree in biomedical science-related field required; strong preference for oncology, immunology, or radiation biology expertise
  • Minimum of 8 years working experience after completion of doctoral degree, with 4-6 years in a leadership / management role; previous supervisory experience required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience with strategic partnering and relationship-building
  • Critical thinking and innovative entrepreneurial skills
  • Ability to establish working relationships with diverse groups, including coalitions of scientific societies, scientists, physicians, policy-makers
  • Proven leadership, team-building skills, and commitment to diversity are required
  • Experience with federal agencies (e.g., NIH, FDA, CDC)
  • Experience in the area of public policy, science policy, regulatory processes
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities
  • Ability to work with volunteers to develop and implement projects
  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting, organize work projects, and complete tasks within assigned timeframes
  • Excellent organizational, oral and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
