Gustavus Adolphus College invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position of Assistant Professor (Genetics) in the Department of Biology to begin September 1, 2020.

The Biology Department offers a rigorous and diverse academic experience to undergraduate students as part of a strong liberal arts education. Our faculty are active teacher-scholars who value collaborations both within and between disciplines. Our students, majors and non-majors, explore how biology intersects with issues of social, cultural, philosophical and environmental value. Strengths of our curriculum include emphasis on quantitative analyses, professional writing, reasoning and courses that include laboratories and/or research projects in subjects from genetic regulation to ecological dynamics.  Our majors develop breadth through a four course core and depth through their electives, and most engage in research and/or internships. Together with the Chemistry Department, we also provide support integral to the major offered by the Biochemistry & Molecular Biology Program, including the Molecular Genetics course taught by this position. Our graduates, an average 60 majors each year, pursue employment, as well as graduate and professional studies in biology, biochemistry, neuroscience, and environmental or health-related fields. We are particularly excited about our newly expanded and renovated facilities, which will provide even more opportunities for innovative teaching and research.

Major/Essential Functions: Gustavus faculty teach, advise, conduct research, and serve the college and department. Primary teaching responsibilities will include advanced-level Genetics and advanced-level Molecular Genetics and, in any given year, some combination of intermediate-level Cell & Molecular Biology, introductory-level Biology, and/or contribution(s) to our integrated liberal arts curriculum.

Minimum Qualifications: 

• PhD in Genetics or a related field by June 1, 2020; 
• Prior experience teaching in at least one instructional unit (i.e., class, workshop, or training session) in the life sciences; 
• Commitment to teaching undergraduate students;
• Commitment to advising and/or mentoring undergraduate students;
• A plan for research in molecular genetics or a related field that will include undergraduates as collaborators; 
• Experience working with people from diverse backgrounds and a demonstrated commitment to pedagogical methods that enable students across racial, ethnic, and socio-economic groups to reach their maximum potential;
• Commitment to service within the department and college;
• Commitment to the liberal arts.

Preferred Qualifications: 

• Post-doctoral research experience; 
• Experience teaching genetics and/or molecular genetics material and as an instructor of record; 
• Demonstrated effectiveness of teaching at the collegiate level;
• Evidence of advising/mentoring undergraduate students; 
• Specific plan for research with undergraduates as collaborators using a model system and/or experimental approach(es) contributing new expertise to the department; 
• Evidence of working effectively with people from diverse backgrounds toward shared goals; Evidence of success using pedagogical methods that enable students across racial, ethnic, and socio-economic groups to reach their maximum potential;
• Evidence of service within a department, program or university;
• Experience with a liberal arts framework.
