The Biomedical Sciences Program at Midwestern University College of Graduate Studies has an immediate opening for a National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant-funded postdoctoral position in the laboratory of Dr. Mitra Esfandiarei. The successful candidate will work on an NIH-funded study to investigate the role of endothelial dysfunction in driving the progression of aortic aneurysm and cardiovascular dysfunctions in a well-established animal model of aortic aneurysm. There is also the opportunity for the postdoctoral fellow to get involved in another ongoing research project investigating cardiovascular dysfunction in the animal models of Alzheimer’s disease. During the study, the postdoctoral fellow will gain hands-on experience in various state of the art in vivo, ex vivo, and in vitro techniques in the field of pathophysiology, pharmacology, histology, and cell & molecular biology including high resolution ultrasound imaging, small chamber myograph, conventional histology, immunohistochemistry, fluorescence microscopy, Western blotting, RT-PCR, and small animal handling and surgery. As part of the training program, the postdoctoral fellow will also have the opportunity to gain valuable experience in graduate course teaching, and supervision and mentorship activities within the department.

 

Highly productive and motivated applicants with a PhD in Biological Sciences, Pharmacology, Physiology, Cell Biology, or a related field are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to applicants with previous experience working with small laboratory animals in the field of cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases, and a track record of scientific achievement as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Unsupervised planning and execution of experiments, data collection and analysis
  • Active participation in the preparation of scientific abstracts, manuscripts and/or grants.
  • Perform in vivo experiments using mouse models established in the laboratory
  • Perform ex vivo assays using freshly isolated tissue in small chamber myography system
  • Perform standard molecular and cellular assays including DNA/RNA prep, RT-PCR, ELISA, Western blotting, histological staining, imaging, and image analysis
  • Perform other related job duties as assigned or delegated.
  • Help with supervision and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students and medical fellows in the laboratory
  • Participation in teaching and service activities in the department

Required Education, Skills & Abilities

  • PhD in Biological Sciences, Pharmacology, Physiology, Cell Biology, or a related field
  • Excellent reading, writing, and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and work ethic.
  • Good knowledge of common statistical software and computer programs
  • Demonstrated project management skills, including the ability to set priorities and excellent time management skills.
