The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), one of the largest Institutes of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is seeking exceptional applicants with diverse skill sets in basic and translational infectious disease research to serve as a supervisory microbiologist in the Division of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (DMID). DMID supports extramural research to control and prevent diseases caused by virtually all human infectious agents except HIV. DMID directs a program of research grants and contracts in microbiology and infectious diseases.

The supervisory microbiologist will oversee the Virology Branch (VB) within DMID. The incumbent will be responsible for overseeing the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of a research portfolio of viral infectious diseases. This position has a direct responsibility to accelerate development of vaccines and other countermeasures to respond to threats from viral infections including Zika, Ebola, dengue, chikungunya, and acute flaccid myelitis from early stage development to clinical evaluation. This position is a key point of contact with the Department of Health and Human Services, the Food and Drug Administration, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, industry, and international partners to coordinate and expedite U.S. government responses to emerging viral infections.

Qualifications

Applicants should have a degree in microbiology. Alternatively, they may qualify with a degree in biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra or their equivalent.

Applicants should also have one year of experience assessing program priorities to recommend and propose new and/or modified research initiatives; overseeing scientific, fiscal, and administrative responsibilities for an organization; managing or evaluating a comprehensive research portfolio; and providing leadership and direction for the planning, implementation, and management of an extramural program.  

Experience in basic, translational, or clinical research in viral diseases, experience managing and evaluating a comprehensive research portfolio, and supervisory experience are preferred.
