Job Details

Physician assistants at MD Anderson Cancer Center partner with physicians in achieving excellence in oncology patient care. In 2015, MD Anderson surpassed 300 physician assistants, and that number continues to grow as more departments come to rely on the skills, knowledge and abilities of physician assistants to ensure that the highest quality of care is delivered to all patients.

MD Anderson's Radiation Treatment Center is the most comprehensive facility of its kind in the world. Our tools and expertise allow us to offer patients the most effective and advanced radiation treatments available, including new therapies that reduce or eliminate some of the side effects of radiation treatment. Most patients are referred to the Radiation Treatment Center by another MD Anderson care center. We also accept patient self-referrals and external physician referrals. Types of cancers we treat: Breast cancer; Central nervous system tumors; Gastrointestinal cancers; Genitourinary cancers; Gynecologic cancers; Head and neck cancers; Lymphoma and myeloma; Melanoma; Sarcoma; Pediatric cancers; and Thoracic cancers.

SUMMARY

The Physician Assistant in the Radiation Oncology Clinic will work a Monday – Friday day shift in an outpatient setting. The patient population includes adults and children. The department is open to considering new graduates. Previous experience in Radiation Oncology/Oncology.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Provides assessment, triage and therapeutic management of patient/family needs throughout the disease process as an integral part of an interdisciplinary team. Acts under the authority and supervision of the attending physician and in accordance with regulations, hospital policy, protocols and clinical pathways. Obtains medical histories, performs physical examinations, reviews/orders diagnostic tests and radiographic results, formulates and manages patient treatment plans and outcomes. May performs as first or second assist on operative cases, using fine motor skills and manual dexterity. Performs procedures, prescribes treatment and signs prescriptions in accordance with institution and state requirements. Screens physician calls to educate patient/family on care and resources. Makes rounds with interdisciplinary team. Collaborates in research projects, formulates protocols and applies research to practice.

EDUCATION
Required: Graduate of a Physician Assistant training program approved by the Council of Medical Education of the American Medical Association.

EXPERIENCE

Required: None

Preferred: Radiation oncology, oncology experience preferred.



LICENSE/CERTIFICATION
Required: PA certification by the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants. Licensed by the Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners.

MAY BE REQUIRED: Eligible to be granted limited prescriptive authority by the State of Texas.

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position requires working in Patient Care Unit (e.g. Nursing unit; outpatient clinic). Refer to the Position Description for specific ADA requirements.
