Postdoctoral Fellow Position in Neuroscience

Applications are invited for motivated scholars to join the Department of Neuroscience and Cell Biology at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School to carry out one of the following projects.

Project #1 is to understand the molecular and cellular mechanisms of hippocampal synaptic plasticity and neurodegeneration, with a particular focus on the roles of cell polarity regulators. We are seeking applications from self-motivated individuals with a strong commitment to neuroscience research and evidence of productivity. Prior experiences with mouse models, primary neuron cultures, confocal and/or two-photon imaging are highly preferable.

Project #2 is to understand dopaminergic nerve terminal function and its dysregulation in disease conditions. Dopaminergic signaling regulates a multitude of human behaviors, including body movements, reward and addiction. Loss of dopamine neurons in the Substantia Nigra leads to a debilitating neurodegenerative disorder - Parkinson's disease (PD). Evidence suggests that synaptic impairments may be an early sign of neurodegeneration. Our goal is to understand how synaptic PD-risk variants, such as SYNJ1 and SNCA, dysregulate synaptic function and ultimately give rise to specific vulnerability in the dopaminergic pathway. We use primary neuron cultures from genetic mouse models combined with quantitative imaging, biochemical and systems analyses to understand cell type specific regulation and vulnerability in PD pathogenesis. Prior experiences with mouse models, primary neuron cultures, quantitative imaging are highly preferable.

Rutgers University offers tremendous training and career development opportunities for postdoctoral fellows. The university has a vibrant, collaborative neuroscience research community with over 250 research laboratories engaged in basic, translational and clinical neuroscience research.  The Department of Neuroscience and Cell Biology is located on the Piscataway campus in central New Jersey with easy access to New York City and Philadelphia.  Many world-class academic institutions, biotech and pharmaceutical companies are within commuting distance to the campus.

Applicants who are interested in pursuing project #1 should submit a Curriculum Vitae, names of three references and a cover letter stating their research interests and goals to huaye.zhang@rutgers.edu.

Applicants who are interested in pursuing project #2 should submit a Curriculum Vitae, names of three references and a cover letter stating their research interests and goals to pingyue.pan@rutgers.edu.

Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  1. Design and lead the project as advised by the supervisor.
  2. Maintain accurate records of laboratory notebooks and research activity.
  3. Review literature and prepares manuscripts and abstracts.
  4. Prepare experimental data for conference presentations, publications and grant applications.
  5. Engage in scientific communication, training of junior personnel including graduate and undergraduate students.
  6. Understand and adhere to Rutgers’ compliance standards as they appear in RBHS’s Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy.
  7. Perform other related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

The candidate is expected to have a PhD degree in Neuroscience or related field with a strong publication record, passion for scientific discovery, and a minimum of one (1) year experience in at least two of the following 1) Primary neuronal cell culture 2) live cell imaging, confocal/two photon imaging 3) synaptic morphology or physiology or 4) animal model, behavior, pathology. A detail-oriented and quantitative mind is greatly appreciated. Additional expertise in molecular biology, biochemistry, and virus production/intracranial injections is desirable.
