QBI - UCSF has a full-time opening for a Science Project Manager / Science
The Krogan lab is based in the Quantitative Biosciences Institute (QBI) at UCSF, and is affiliated with the Department of Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology and the Gladstone Institute of Data Science and Biotechnology. In our research, we use systems biology approaches to tackle a variety of human diseases by investigating the underlying basic biological mechanisms. We strongly believe that the best science will be done by a diverse set of scientists who attack a given problem from different angles, which is why we are involved in many fruitful national and international collaborations.
Professor Krogan serves as the director of QBI. QBI is about breaking down the walls in academia, and instead creating a framework that fosters open collaboration across the biomedical and physical sciences seeking quantitative methods to address pressing problems in biology and biomedicine. Technology, and the data derived from it, is at the heart of QBI’s collaborative efforts. QBI scientists are the experts developing experimental and computational tools that allow for effective connections between the discovery research and clinical worlds, enabling novel therapies for disease.
We are looking for a sharp science writer and analyst with great managerial skills. In your role as Scientific Research Analyst, you will help to coordinate large scientific initiatives and collaborations, which would also include preparing research manuscripts and grants for the Krogan lab and QBI-UCSF. You will work in a dynamic environment amongst a large group of enthusiastic and high-performing scientists, and support their work. The candidate is expected to provide input, be involved with, although not carry out the actual research. This person will be the right hand for a prolific lead scientist who submits and receives a large volume of grants and industry contracts. The ideal candidate should be independent, a self starter with a can-do attitude and someone who likes to suggest new approaches when needed. Hard worker willing to put in long hours in a fun and supportive environment; some travel.
Tasks include but are not limited to:
- Science writing, both for grant applications, progress reports and support of scientific publications
- Coordinating large collaborative projects and direct science to the appropriate scientists involved
- Overseeing and managing the scientific section of progress reports
- Attending regular lab and scientific collaboration meetings to stay on top of all research activities that are going on in the lab
- Representing Principal Investigator (PI) in certain scientific contexts.
Scientific Project Management:
- Assisting PI in creating budgets and other grant components, such as budget justifications and biosketches
- Managing large scale grant applications, including gathering of documents and various components for these
- Liaise and collaborate with UCSF’s Research Management Services department on grant submissions
- Researching and identifying grant opportunities, and working with the appropriate scientists to submit applications
- Seeking out and identifying philanthropic and private sector grants, donations or gifts as well as fellowships
- Evaluating personnel needs and filling expertise gaps in the lab by managing hiring of new members
- Keeping track of which scientists work on which grants and projects (serve as liaison with lab manager / lead scientists)
- Managing grants document library for the lab and QBI
- Liaising with Post Awards Analyst.
QUANTITATIVE BIOSCIENCES INSTITUTE
The Quantitative Biosciences Institute (QBI) is an Organized Research Unit at UCSF that seeks transformative results in biomedicine; QBI supports fundamental quantitative research in the biological sciences. QBI fosters collaborations across the biomedical and the physical sciences, seeking quantitative methods to address pressing problems in biology and biomedicine. Motivated by problems of human disease, QBI is committed to investigating fundamental biological mechanisms, because ultimately solutions to many diseases have been revealed by unexpected discoveries in the basic sciences. QBI currently has four center grants focused on cancer, infectious diseases and psychiatric disorders.

PhD in Life Sciences or in related area and minimum five years of experience, or equivalent experience / training
In-depth academic background and experience in selected area of research including record of publications in related field(s)
Writing experience, publications and grant applications
Advanced oral and written communication skills. Advanced skills analyzing information, problems, situations, policies or procedures to define the problem, need or objective
Advanced interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with internal and external peers, managers and teams
Proven ability to formulate solutions, new program development, alternative choices and implications for implementation
Advanced program planning and management of projects
Relevant work experience in scientific management
Relevant work experience in scientific editing
