Job Details

The Department of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery exists to serve MD Anderson research programs. Our primary mission is to provide the best possible veterinary care, facilities and services in support of the institutional animal care and use program, in keeping with all applicable laws, regulations, guidelines and Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) accreditation standards. The department's capabilities are broad based and flexible to accommodate a variety of research interests while remaining in compliance with required standards. The basis of our program is centered on the well-being of all animals, the best interests of our researchers, and the best interest of MD Anderson and its animal care and use program.

1. SUPERVISION and COMMUNICATION:

* Supervises, trains, schedules, and evaluates the activities and job performance of clinical pathology laboratory staff. Makes recommendations to the Section Chief for hire, promotions and disciplinary actions.

* Explores efficient operating procedures, and adjusts and prioritizes work to achieve maximum productivity to meet the workload demands. Coordinates, implements and evaluates the various activities, functions, and procedures of the daily activity in the clinical pathology laboratory and coordinates these activities within the laboratories, other service areas of the department, research investigators in other departments, and investigators outside the institution. Actively participates in training new employees.

* Assists staff and peers with tasks after completion of assigned work.

* Manages all customer service interactions with diplomacy and professionalism, actively facilitates resolutions to problems, and addresses the needs of clients both internal and external.

* Communicates daily with section Veterinary Pathologists, laboratory staff, other departmental faculty and staff, and investigators verbally or written, as needed. Ensures compliance with all institutional safety policies.

* Provides reciprocal backup for Chief, Histology Laboratory for staff management and other functions as needed in the Chief, Histology Laboratory's absence.

2. CLINICAL PATHOLOGY LABORATORY OVERSIGHT:

* Assists/performs laboratory functions generated by lab when positions are vacated due to employee absences, open positions or high workload. Troubleshoots equipment and coordinates repairs with vendors and/or Operations Associate Director as needed in all areas of laboratory. Ensures inventory system is properly managed and assures that adequate supplies are available to ensure service in the laboratories.

* Trains new lab personnel in all of the above mentioned procedures and protocols necessary to enable rotation through the assigned areas.

* Assist Veterinary Pathologists with researcher interaction including, but not limited to, study design and coordination; data collection, management, and analysis; and report generation. Perform screening toxicological evaluations of study compounds to determine anticipated pathology.

* Ensures laboratory adherence to safety standards, especially in the use of hazardous chemicals.

* Responsible for the design, execution and effectiveness of a system of internal controls.

* Assist Pathologists with graphics for publications and presentations. Responsible for implementation and ongoing use of various electronic systems and ensures appropriate lab personnel are trained in its usage.

3. RECORD KEEPING AND DATA INPUT:

* Produces reports on laboratory products, metrics, and other information as required by the Section Chief or departmental administration. Monitors section budget and participates in annual rate setting. Maintain skill set in pathology procedures, including operation and troubleshooting of equipment. Works with developers to find and report bugs in the system and monitor when fixed. Creates and modifies security profiles for designated users. Maintains knowledge of laboratory management and electronic colony management system procedures related to pathology activities. Participates in development and use of other pathology related databases and data management systems. Maintain data and tissue archives.

4. Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION:
Required: Bachelor's degree in a related field.

EXPERIENCE:
Required: Three years or related experience in a high volume laboratory.

One of the following: Certified Medical Technologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists Board of Registry (BOR).

Certified Clinical Laboratory Specialist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologist Board of Registry (BOR).

Certified Cytogenetics Technologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists Board of Registry (BOR).

Certified Histocompatability Technologist by the American Board of Histocompatability and Immunogenetics.

Certified in a specialized field relevant to the laboratory assigned.
