The Neuroscience Initiative at ASRC seeks an experienced Research Scientist/Research Associate to establish a research program in the circadian control of sleep in Drosophila melanogaster in collaboration with the Principal Investigator (PI) and his trainees. This position reports to a Professor in the Neuroscience Initiative.

The position is funded until August 2021. Contingent on satisfactory performance and budget availability, this appointment may be extended beyond August 2021. The extension of this appointment would be funded by CUNY Research Foundation which is a separate entity from the Graduate Center and CUNY.

Duties include but are not limited to:
- Develops video-based sleep and behavior monitoring systems.
- Develops methods to gauge the circadian modulation of sleep propensity in Drosophila.
- Creates new genetic lines of Drosophila.
- Executes genetic screens in Drosophila.
- Performs immunocytochemistry and confocal imaging of Drosophila Brains.
- Conducts live imaging experiments.

General Duties:
- Conducts academic research in connection with CUNY programs; may assist faculty, staff, and students in conducting research and lead research efforts involving others.  
- Develops research plans and proposals and participates in acquiring funding 
- Collects, analyzes, and assures validity of data 
- Writes progress reports; writes and publishes findings 
- Collaborates with internal and external colleagues 
- Adheres to standards for safety and hygiene and ethical conduct as defined by the University and relevant outside parties

Minimum Qualifications:
    Doctoral Degree in a related field and demonstrated research ability.

Other Qualifications:
A preferred candidate should have:
- Previous work experience with Drosophila. 
- Ability to use the standard tools of Drosophila genetics to create new genetic lines for research.
- Expertise in automated tracking of animal behavior.
- Expertise in machine learning for the automated characterization of complex behavior.
- Expertise in the development of new technologies for the video analysis of freely-moving Drosophila.
- Expertise in Drosophila genetics.
- Strong attention to details. 
- Reliable and diligent. 
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Experience working with trainees at the undergraduate and graduate level.
