Position Summary

The Department of Population Sciences at City of Hope (COH) is looking for a Staff Scientist who will play a pivotal role in advancing our digital pathology efforts. A major focus of our group is the development, reliable performance and analysis of tissue-based cancer biomarker assays, specifically immunohistochemical, immunofluorescent and chromogenic/fluorescent in-situ hybridization stains of human tumor samples. There is increasing interest in the

quantitation of immune infiltrates in the tumor microenvironment via multiplex immunofluorescent assays. Another area of interest is the application of deep learning algorithms to predict cancer phenotypes. Existing resources at COH

include two high throughput slide scanners, and we are in the process of evaluating commercial and open software packages for analysis of large numbers of images from several research studies.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Digital image analysis of histologic and cytologic samples (primarily human and some animal tissues).
  • Quantitation of biomarker expression in cancer cells immunohistochemical and immunofluorescent stains).
  • Development and optimization of pattern recognition algorithms that accurately distinguish relevant and irrelevant cells in human tissue samples from a variety of tumor types.
  • Development of deep learning algorithms to predict outcome from pathologic tumor samples.
  • Morphometric analysis of cell populations of interest.

The successful applicant will be expected to work both independently and in collaboration with other researchers and pathologists.

Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:

  • Doctoral degree (M.D., D.V.M., Ph.D., etc.).
  • Expertise in image analysis of biological specimens.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.

Preferred education experience and skills:
  • At least one year of postdoctoral work experience.
  • Expertise in histopathology.
  • Background in cancer research.
  • Familiarity with image analysis software.
  • Strong programming skills.
  • Background in artificial intelligence/deep learning/neural networks
