The primary purpose of the Research Assistant II position in the Department of Infectious Diseases, Infection Control and Employee Health is to coordinate and conduct experiments and carry out projects with a main focus in microbiology research and other related basic/translational science areas. Constructs, assembles and operates laboratory apparatus and equipment. Reads literature and confers with superiors regarding new procedures and modifies them according to the needs of the project. Records and evaluates data obtained in accordance with methods requested.
Laboratory Function Responsibilities:
1. Employee will conduct and carry out research experiments and prepare other samples for testing as directed by supervisor. Communication with supervisor is required to discuss goals of projects. Employee must understand and carry out detailed verbal and/or written instructions on how to conduct an experiment in order to achieve the goals of the project. Verbally asks questions of supervisor and/or other laboratory personnel to clarify and obtain further information needed to prepare for experiment.

2. Equipment and chemicals: Candidate should be have basic knowledge of solution and buffer preparation in which ionic concentration and pH is critical. Should be able to operate equipment such as centrifuges, pH meters, spectrophotometers, and other laboratory equipment. Must verbally or in writing report problems and/or possible problems with the operation of equipment to the supervisor and/or other faculty in the laboratory. The employee duties can involve working with organic solvents, pharmaceutical compounds, and other biopolymers/biomaterials in accordance with laboratory safety protocols.

3. Microorganism culture: The preferred employee will have experience in sterile technique, sub-culturing microorganisms, manipulation of viable cells and determining cell counts. Candidate should understand serial dilutions including how to calculate and make dilutions and adjust final results for such dilutions. Routine tasks include preparation and autoclave sterilization of working solutions. The employee will set up databases, maintain various common stock systems such bacterial glycerol stocks.

4. Animal manipulation and hazardous materials: Employee should be willing to collaborate with Vet Med for occasional protocols that include animal manipulation. Precaution against blood-borne pathogens and microbial must be taken whenever patient tissues/cultures are used in accordance with the institutional Universal Precautions Plan. Some protocols occasionally require weekend or holiday manipulations to be coordinated with other staff. Must demonstrate and practice laboratory safety precautions.

5. Record and analyze data and communicate information: Must maintain accurate and meticulous records of experimental data and protocols. Enter data from handwritten records to computer using Excel or similar software to analyze data and to provide data graphs or sponsor designed data base, depending on the study.

6. Conduct library work: Find and copy journal articles as required and read and understand articles related to experiments being conducted. Maintain a database of laboratory procedures in the laboratory using a computer and a manual filing system. Must be able to conduct searches and retrievals, use of Pubmed, Google, and other systems. Must be able to communicate information and translate knowledge gleaned to the laboratory bench. Library work requires good reading and comprehension skills as well as diligence and patience.

All Other duties as assigned

Required: Bachelor's degree with major course works in one of the basic sciences. Two years experience in scientific or experimental research work. No experience required with preferred degree.
