The Department of Biological Sciences at Old Dominion University is seeking applications for three tenure-track faculty positions to begin in Fall 2020. Preference will be given to candidates at the Assistant Professor level, but highly qualified individuals may be considered at the level of Associate Professor. ODU is surrounded by wetlands, and applicants who engage in research in wetlands of the Mid-Atlantic Coastal Plain are preferred. ODU has an active research initiative, the Institute for Coastal Adaptation and Resilience (https://oduadaptatonandresilience.org), that focuses on the changing environment in our region. The Department of Biological Sciences has a vigorous graduate program with over 100 students enrolled. Information about the Department is available at https://www.odu.edu/biosci.

We invite applications for the following tenure-track Assistant Professor positions:

Invertebrate Biology: We seek candidates working in coastal or estuarine systems and whose research focus is in ecology, evolution or organismal biology of invertebrates in these systems.  Individual interests could span from local to global scales and across multiple levels of biological organization (population, community, ecosystem), and should be complementary to the expertise of current biology faculty and faculty in other departments throughout ODU. This person would play a key role in the very popular Marine Biology concentration Program for undergraduates. Hampton Roads borders the largest estuary in North America, and ODU Biology faculty have been the lead investigators for the Chesapeake Bay Monitoring Program for over three decades.

Plant Biology (Two Positions):  Candidates with research interests in plants of estuarine, freshwater, or marine systems will be considered, and we particularly welcome applications from candidates with expertise in wetland plant ecology, evolution, or physiology. Individual interests could span from local to global scales and across multiple levels of biological organization (population, community, ecosystem), and should be complementary to the expertise of current biology faculty and faculty from other departments throughout ODU.

Qualifications:  Candidates must have a doctorate (Ph.D.) in biology or related discipline.  Candidates must have a strong scholarship record commensurate with experience, demonstrated potential to establish an active research program with external funding, demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching, and strong communication skills.

Postdoctoral or equivalent experience is required. We are seeking candidates who share ODU’s commitment to the principle that diversity and inclusion are critical to maintaining excellence.

Responsibilities: The successful candidates are expected to develop and maintain active research programs that are externally funded, teach undergraduate and graduate courses, and contribute to service in the department. The invertebrate position will share in teaching of the high-demand courses in invertebrate zoology and marine ecology, and the new hire would develop a course in wetlands invertebrate ecology or other courses of interest. The plant biology positions will share in teaching the heavily demanded undergraduate Botany course as well as provide other needed courses in plant ecology, plant-microbe interactions, plant ecophysiology, or other courses of interest.  Candidates who are prepared to engage in interdisciplinary research will be especially welcome.

ODU (www.odu.edu) is a minority-serving, state-supported,  Carnegie doctoral higher research active institution enrolling approximately 25,000 students, including 6,000 graduate students. It is located in Norfolk, a historic waterfront city in southeastern Virginia offering outstanding quality of life (www.norfolk.gov). ODU and the College of Sciences are committed to inclusive excellence, recognizing that diversity enhances and enriches our educational mission, employment experience, and community engagement. We seek candidates whose research, teaching, and/or service experiences have prepared them to fulfill our commitment to inclusion.

Interested individuals should submit a cover letter describing their qualifications for the position, a curriculum vitae, a statement of research achievements and research plans, a teaching statement, a diversity statement, and names and contact information for at least three references electronically through job posting at https://jobs.odu.edu/.  We encourage individuals to note any existing collaborations with other applicants in their cover letter and to explain how they would continue their collaborations in these positions. Review of applicants will begin on September 15, 2019 and continue until the position is filled. Questions about the positions can be directed to Dr. Holly Gaff (hgaff@odu.edu), Search Committee Chair, Department of Biological Sciences, ODU.

It is the policy of Old Dominion University to provide equal employment, educational and social opportunities for all persons, without regard to race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy), national origin, gender, age, veteran status, disability, political affiliation, sexual orientation or genetic information. Minorities, women, veterans and individuals with disabilities are encouraged to apply.
