The Role

The Corporate Controller is a key leadership position within Finance at Moderna, a dynamic and high growth organization that has recently completed its IPO and is radically changing the biotechnology industry. As a member of the Accounting Leadership Team, the Corporate Controller will report directly to the CAO and is responsible for all aspects of accounting operations, the financial close, financial consolidation and statutory accounting, accounting policies, and the related controls framework. In addition, s/he will partner with the external financial reporting team to ensure accurate and compliant external reporting and partner with the technical accounting team to research, analyze and implement new accounting standards.

This role will be responsible for driving cross-functional process improvements and change management to optimize our business processes and enable the Company to scale its operations to support future growth. This role will have a goal to specifically drive efficiencies in our financial close and reporting process, support and optimize other financial processes, including procure-to-pay, and ensure our employees are adequately trained to comply with corporate financial policies. This individual must be comfortable challenging the status quo, driving change, managing through uncertainty and supporting a high growth fast paced organization.

As an organizational leader s/he is responsible for building and leading a high performing team that can adapt and effectively scale as the Company grows, while balancing process efficiency with controls and compliance. S/he will inspire, motivate, and promote a results-oriented focus in others and earn the confidence and credibility to partner with his/her team, senior leaders, external auditors and other business process stakeholders.

The successful candidate must have public company experience with a comparable or larger and more complex organization and have demonstrated the ability to accelerate the financial close cycle to meet accelerated SEC filing timelines, familiar with implementing SOX controls, and have experience driving cross-functional process improvements, including procure-to-pay and record-to-report processes. This role will partner with Finance and other G&A teams, as well as our business partners to improve all touch points required to ensure an accurate and accelerated financial close, and to identify and provide solutions for process challenges.

Here's What You'll Do:

Accounting Responsibilities
  • Direct and manage the Company's financial accounting activities in accordance with U.S.GAAP, Sarbanes-Oxley requirements, and best practices in our business processes.
  • Oversee and ensure the financial close process and timeline sufficiently meets our external SEC filing timeline
  • Drive and ensure timely reporting of our monthly and quarterly results and related variance analysis and presentations to senior management and audit committee
  • Oversee and manage the quarterly and annual external audit process
  • Develop and implement effective systems, accounting policies and financial controls which maintain the integrity of all financial transactions and reporting of the Company
  • Oversee and direct the execution of cash management, banking transactions and support the Company's annual insurance renewal process
  • Support the implementation and operationalization of new accounting standard, R&D collaborations, and various complex business transactions
  • Oversee disbursement activities, ensuring the accurate and timely processing of accounts payable and employee expense reports
  • Oversee revenue recognition and billing activities to ensure proper revenue recognition and accurate and timely invoicing
  • Ensure the Company maintains regulatory and U.S. GAAP compliance with all corporate income, sales & property tax requirements
  • Build, develop and manage a team of accounting professional capable of driving successful business decisions
  • Establish and maintain strong business partnerships with key counterparts including, FP&A, Procurement, and functional business owners

Operational Efficiency Responsibilities
  • Seeks continuous improvements through identifying and implementing creative solutions to support greater efficiency and effectiveness of processes and procedures, and partnering with our Digital team to leverage functionalities in our key financial systems.
  • Identify and drive/implement new strategies to streamline, simplify and shorten our monthly and quarterly financial close cycle while maintaining high quality results
  • Collaborate with other finance and business stakeholders to drive cross-functional initiatives, including implementation of accounting-related systems and applications and process improvements
  • Support and drive change management to ensure proper communication, training and execution of business process improvements within the Finance team and across the Company
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, teach and motivate team members to produce high quality results within tight timelines while simultaneously managing several key projects.
  • Manage, lead and mentor a team of 10+ skilled accountants and leaders to support a quality financial close process and to continuously improve our key business processes.

Here's What You'll Bring to the Table:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting required, and an MBA or Master's degree preferred
  • CPA required, Big 4 public accounting firm experience
  • 15+ years of combined public accounting and biotechnology/pharmaceutical Industry accounting experience preferred
  • Prior Controller or equivalent experience
  • Experience managing an accounting team of a mid-size publicly traded company
  • Demonstrated ability to build strong financial and accounting teams
  • Strong knowledge of US GAAP, internal controls and managing an accelerated financial close process
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully accelerate a financial close process to meet SEC filings timelines for large accelerated filers
  • Strong knowledge of life science accounting transactions, including R&D collaborations and clinical accruals, and revenue recognition under the new revenue recognition standard (ASC 606)
  • Experience with financial systems including SAP, Blackline, and Concur (or another OCR tool); and Microsoft Suite of products
  • Demonstrated ability to drive continuous process improvements in key finance business processes
  • Proactive, responsive and timely problem solver, pays attention to detail, drives processes and meets deadlines.
  • Outstanding project management, organizational, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively across functional teams and at various leadership levels
