Sr. Manager / Associate Director, Strategic Alliances

The Role:

Reporting to the Head, Business Development & Corporate Strategy, the Senior Manager / Associate Director of Strategic Alliances will be responsible for the oversight and active management of key strategic biopharma alliances, as well as for supporting the transactions team (i.e. Business Development and Legal) during the deal sourcing and structuring phase by facilitating seamless diligence processes. The position entails cross-functional collaboration with colleagues from the R&D, CMC and finance organizations to ensure the good health of alliances and the proactive management of collaboration of matters.

Leveraging a broad base of prior pharmaceutical/ biotech industry experience, a high attention to detail, and experience in managing complex long-term projects, collaborations and acquisitions, the successful candidate will assume a key role in a business-critical function that directly impacts Moderna's mission of delivering a new generation of transformative medicines for patients.

Here's What You'll Do:
  • Work with the Business Development and Legal teams (1) during a deal process by facilitating diligence and participating in negotiation sessions, and (2) post successful execution of definitive agreements by operationalizing such new strategic alliances, and the establishment and management of governance bodies
  • Own and be accountable for the proactive management of Moderna's new strategic alliances, while minimizing escalation issues, and developing resolution plans
  • Monitor the strategic relevance of the alliance for the partner by being an expert on the partner's strategic imperatives, most recent clinical readouts and commercial performance, investment activities (BD and M&A)
  • Define strategic goals for assigned alliances, perform frequent "health checks" and report to senior management on progress and any foreseeable milestones
  • Build an effective communication channel with partner's designated alliance manager
  • Set the communication channels and meetings for project teams, prepare meaningful agendas, develop meeting deliverables with internal cross functional team, lead regular joint project team meetings and steering committee meetings, capture meeting takeaways and key decisions
  • Follow-up on various takeaways and drive process to facilitate internal discussions and the evaluation of critical issues and potential solutions
  • Show strong abilities in contract interpretation and ability to translate collaboration agreement boundaries to productive frameworks to overcome issues and disputes
  • Coordinate with various functional area designees including R&D, regulatory, CMC, IP, finance, legal to achieve internal alignment for alliance-related decisions, and to effectively product related deliverables
  • Oversee financial obligations for assigned strategic alliances (per the agreements, reimbursement of defined activities, tracking of milestones and cost sharing models, etc.)


Here's What You'll Bring to the Table:
  • 5+ years of experience working for a pharmaceutical/biotech company in corporate development, licensing, and/or strategic analysis capacities, or similar experience in a professional services or investment capacity (e.g., management or strategy consulting, investment banking, private equity, or venture capital)
  • PhD or Master's degree/MBA, with scientific background
  • Exposure to transactions as a BD/M&A professional or through professional services
  • Applied / relevant experience in collaboration agreements review, analytical evaluation, technical communication, transaction process management and project management
  • Experience with development of budgets and cost sharing models
  • Knowledge of biotech industry intricacies (e.g. development risk, portfolio prioritization, approach to valuing pipeline assets, importance of regulation and intellectual property)
  • Strong track record of high performance, while actively networked and engaged in biopharma BD communities
  • Professional gravitas necessary to make impactful first impressions
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills to communicate across levels and to various audiences
