in Plant-based Foods for Nutrition and Health

The College of Pharmacy and Nutrition at the University of Saskatchewan invites applications for a tenured or tenure-track Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Plant-based Foods for Nutrition and Health. The Canada Research Chair (CRC) Program is the flagship of a national strategy to make Canada one of the world's top countries in research and development (www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca).

The successful candidate will lead an innovative program of research that responds to concerns about global diet trends and need for sustainable sources of protein and nutrient-dense foods to address the persistent problems of malnutrition, e.g., undernutrition, micronutrient deficiency, obesity, and diet-related diseases. The chair's work will be of interest to multiple disciplines, sectors, and organizations and contribute to building research collaborations and partnerships locally, nationally, and internationally.

Canada is a world leader in food crop production and the University of Saskatchewan is at the heart of plant-based food research and development. The university is a vital research partner in a regional supercluster of agricultural and food science expertise and cutting-edge technology in plant breeding and value-added protein and co-product processing. The College of Pharmacy and Nutrition has a proud tradition of collaborative research and practice innovation in pharmaceutical and nutritional care. There are opportunities to build on and enhance the college's strengths in internationalization, team science, food security, nutrition education, and chronic diseases. The university is also home to leading-edge research infrastructure, the Canadian Light Source national synchrotron facility, a state-of-the-art Health Sciences Facility, including the College of Pharmacy and Nutrition's food and nutrition research labs. There are opportunities for collaboration on campus with researchers at the Global Institute for Food Security, Crop Development Centre and Departments of Plant Sciences and Food and Bioproduct Sciences, College of Medicine, Western College of Veterinary Medicine, National Research Council, and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada research centres. This makes it an ideal setting for a research program in human nutrition that emphasizes health outcomes while also contributing to nutrition-sensitive food system innovations.

The successful candidate will teach at the undergraduate and graduate level, contribute to service within the college, and supervise graduate students. They will lead an innovative, high quality research program and attract external research funding and excellent trainees.

Qualifications

Candidates must hold a PhD in nutrition or other relevant field and possess the necessary qualifications to be appointed at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. They must demonstrate excellence, creativity, and leadership in research by the significance and quality of their contributions, record of peer-reviewed research funding, if applicable, evidence of successful and varied research collaborations, quality in training and mentorship, and a commitment to knowledge translation, outreach, and exchange.

Tier 2 Chairs are intended for exceptional emerging scholars (i.e., candidates must have less than 10 years of experience as an active researcher in their field at the time of nomination). Applicants who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree (and where career breaks exist, such as maternity, parental or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc.) may have their eligibility for a Tier 2 Chair assessed through the program’s Tier 2 justification process. The successful applicant will be appointed as a tenured or tenure-track faculty member at the Assistant or Associate Professor level in the College of Pharmacy and Nutrition and will be nominated for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair.

Salary bands are as follows: Assistant Professor: $93,293 to $112,109; and Associate Professor: $112,109 to $130,925, with the possibility of merit-based additions.
