B24 is the soft X-ray tomography and super resolution fluorescence microscopy beamline at Diamond offering state-of-the-art cryo-biological imaging facilities.
The full field cryo X-ray microscope at B24 provides for X-ray tomographic imaging at a resolution of up to 25nm and allows acquisition of tomographic data from both native and fluorescent-labelled samples. Then super resolution fluorescence microscope is a joint project with Micron [micron.ox.ac.uk] at the University of Oxford. These techniques allow the visualisation of the ultrastructure of cells and tissue as well as the chemical localisation of associated substructures and biomolecules and provide large-scale cellular context for analysis.
B24 is part of the recently established Biological Cryo-Imaging group [diamond.ac.uk] at Diamond which together with the capabilities of the physical science Imaging and Microscopy group [diamond.ac.uk] provide a platform for using electrons, X-rays and visible light to image an array of samples across a diverse range of length and time scales.
We are now seeking an enthusiastic scientist with experience in X-ray imaging and fluorescence microscopy as applied to biological samples. Suitable candidates will have expertise in sample handling, data acquisition and analysis as well as working with and development of instrumentation.
As a beamline scientist you will work closely with the Principal Beamline Scientist of B24 together with scientists, engineers and software groups in the imaging groups at Diamond to support the continued development and evolution of B24 including design, procurement, construction, commissioning of upgrades as well as ongoing user support. Future upgrade paths will look into new ways of sample delivery, use of phase contrast X-ray imaging and establishing robust correlative imaging workflows (correlative cryo-fluorescence and cryo-soft X-ray microscopy, cryo-CLXM and cryo-CLEM).
The beamline scientist will be expected to develop an internationally competitive research programme which exploits the capabilities of B24 and Diamond in general. You will have access to state-of-the-art laboratories for structural and cellular biology embedded at the beamline and within the Research Complex at Harwell to pursue your research. Diamond has a competitively funded PhD studentship programme and support for external grant funding through national and international funding agencies to take full advantage of the stimulating and exciting international research environment at Diamond is also provided.
Suitable candidates will have experience in imaging of biological cells and expertise and a track-record in X-ray microscopy or optical microscopy techniques. For appointment at the senior level experience in project management and/or a track record in development and commissioning of instrumentation is expected.
