Senior Associate Dean of Research

College of Medicine, University of Tennessee Health Science Center

The College of Medicine at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center is composed of 25 departments on our Memphis Campus, nine departments on our Knoxville campus, and ten departments on our Chattanooga campus. Currently, the College has approximately 1150 paid faculty, 680 medical students, 54 physician assistant students, and over 1300 residents and fellows in 103 GME training programs. Gross revenues for the College exceed $620M annually with greater than $44 million in research expenditures. The Senior Associate Dean of Research plays an essential role in the central leadership of the College’s research. Reporting directly to the new Executive Dean Scott Strome, MD,  the Senior Associate Dean of Research facilitates and directs college’s research and discovery initiatives for both funded and unfunded efforts. The Senior Associate Dean of Research will also identify and develop innovative research strategies and plays a leadership role in helping the campuses meet emerging research opportunities. Cultivating relationships between the College and its private, public, and community-based partners will be a priority for this leader.

Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • The Senior Associate Dean of Reach, in collaboration with the Executive Dean and other leaders across campus, is responsible for proactively thinking about changes in institutional structure, programming, and budget allocation that will grow the College’s national recognition.
  • The Senior Associate Dean of Research works closely with the senior leadership in COM to ensure we continue to recruit and retain the best faculty and researchers.  Further, the Sr. Associate Dean of Research will work closely with leadership in the Office of Research.
  • The Senior Associate Dean of Research will be a close partner with the University of Tennessee Research Foundation (UTRF) to facilitate innovation, entrepreneurship, technology transfer, and intellectual property agreements between UTRF, UTHSC COM faculty, and private-sector entities.
  • The Senior Associate Dean of Research will be a close partner with the leadership of University Communication about research at UTHSC COM to the campus and the public through multiple channels and in making sure that information about federal agency funding opportunities and federal funding changes are broadly communicated across COM.

Preferred skills/experience include:

  • Demonstrated leadership experience in research, and a vision for the future of research.
  • Experience working collaboratively with faculty, staff, students and shared governance groups.
  • A strong commitment to teamwork and ability to work with deans, department chairs, and researchers in establishing financially stable and excellent research programs.
  • Knowledge and experience with intellectual property, the transfer of technologies from lab to market, and the use of industry partnerships in an academic setting, and an interest in providing creative leadership to such efforts.
  • Interest and commitment to fostering entrepreneurial efforts among students, faculty and staff.
  • Experience in working with public and private groups who fund research, including experience with Federal funding agencies, private foundations, industrial partners, and private donors.
  • Record of effective communication; demonstrated ability to work with media and public officials to promote research.
  • Strong organizational and managerial skills.
  • Experience in faculty hiring, retention, and professional development, with a focus on supporting excellence in research.

Requirements:  The successful candidate must have a PhD or MD, must be at the rank of Associate Professor or higher, and have a minimum of five years of leadership experience as a chair, chief, director, or other recognized leadership role. Further, the successful candidate will have an extensive history of external grant funding and exemplary research publication record, or a comparable record/ experience in working with pharma.  Applicants should have a demonstrated commitment to and knowledge of equal employment opportunity and affirmative action.
