Assistant Professor of Biology – Microbiology

The Department of Biology at New Mexico State University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in biology with a specialization in microbiology at the assistant professor level. The successful candidate will carry out basic, applied, or translational research in areas that can include medical microbiology, host-microbe interactions, functional roles of animal/plant microbiomes, or environmental microbiology. The position includes 9-month salary, start-up funding and laboratory space. The applicant must have a Ph.D. in Biology or a related field and at least one year of post-doctoral training at the time of application. The candidate is expected to establish a vigorous independent research program and secure extramural funding. The applicant is expected to contribute to the teaching mission of NMSU by offering lecture and laboratory courses in microbiology and medical microbiology at the upper and lower division undergraduate level (majors and non-majors) as well as graduate courses in their area of expertise. The applicant must be able to guide undergraduate and graduate student research, advise and mentor graduate and undergraduate students, and provide support for student retention and degree completion. The Biology department offers undergraduate degrees in Biology, Microbiology, Genetics, and Conservation Ecology, as well as MS and Ph.D. degrees in Biology.  Opportunities exist to participate in NIH-, NSF- and HHMI-sponsored training programs (e.g., MBRS-RISE, MARC, Bridges).  More information about the department is online at https://bio.nmsu.edu/.   NMSU is a comprehensive land-grant, minority serving institution located in the city of Las Cruces in the beautiful Chihuahuan desert.
