Scientist / Senior Scientist, Infectious Diseases, Microbiome - Bacterial Synthetic Biology


The Infectious Diseases Department at Genentech has an exciting opportunity for a Scientist /Senior Scientist with a strong background in genomic engineering or synthetic biology to join our microbiome science group.  The successful applicant will lead a scientific team to discover and develop novel bacteria-based technologies as biosensors or therapeutics.   This new hire will be excited by research at the interface between technology and biology, be able to define important therapeutic problems, and ultimately drive innovation to solve them.  This hire will conceive, plan and design discovery strategies, and work collaboratively with other cross-functional research groups to advance pipeline projects. Our new Scientist will help shape the future of our capabilities in engineering bacteria as biosensors or therapeutics, and will be expected to present their research externally and publish in peer-reviewed journals. 

Who You Are

We are seeking self-driven and highly motivated candidates with a passion for discovery and innovation.  Requirements for this position include a PhD or MD and postdoctoral training.  We encourage applications from candidates with extensive prior experience as well as those coming directly from exemplary postdoctoral trainings.  Ideal applicants will excel in genomic engineering methodologies or bacterial synthetic biology and be well-versed in microbial biology.  The successful candidate will have demonstrated a sustained record of productivity and substantive scientific contributions as evidenced by consistent high-impact publications, patent inventorship, and/or external presentations.  The candidates should have excellent organizational skills and an ability to prioritize effectively to deliver results within reasonably established timelines, be team-oriented, collegial, and have strong interpersonal and communication skills.
