Tenure track assistant/associate professor in Bioinformatics or Computational Biology

We are looking for

Are you an independent researcher in bioinformatics, turning your enthusiasm and creativity into high-level science, engaging education and societally relevant innovations? Are you collaborative and well organized? Are you ready to grow in a tenure track career path and would you like to work in a diverse and supportive group? Then this may be the right position for you.

We are looking for a highly motivated assistant / associate professor in bioinformatics or computational biology. You have a good scientific track record and a drive to develop your own research line. You can attract funding to build and support a group and you are able to set up a strong academic and industrial network. Your research should connect method development to application, be relevant for plant, animal or microbial biotechnology, and complement the current expertise in the group. Relevant areas include (but are not limited to) metagenomics, metabolomics, proteomics and phenomics. You strive to become an enthusiastic and knowledgeable teacher and supervisor in bioinformatics, offering high-quality education to BSc, MSc and PhD students in topics ranging from data analysis and computation to (molecular) biology. Finally, you are a collaborative team member, contributing to the organization of our group, the university and the scientific community at large. You will spend approximately 40% of your time on research, 40% on education and 20% on organization.

We ask

You should have some years of experience in academia after obtaining a PhD degree, with relevant background to build on. A successfully completed academic study (MSc level, recognized in the Netherlands) and a PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology or a comparable discipline are required. Direct experience with research in plants, animals and/or microbes and with applications in food and agriculture is not needed, but you should be willing to focus your work on these domains and have a vision on how your research and teaching will contribute. You should also demonstrate knowledge of and expertise in programming, software engineering and bioinformatics algorithm development.

We will evaluate your application on several criteria:

  • research quality and output;
  • experience in (efforts toward) acquiring external research funding;
  • international (research) experience;
  • teaching qualifications and experience;
  • education innovation and curriculum development;
  • BSc/MSc thesis and PhD dissertation supervision;
  • activity in the scientific community;
  • (international) collaboration with academia and industry;
  • management of (interdisciplinary) research projects.

The position may be filled as assistant or associate professor, depending on merits and career stage.

The Bioinformatics Group offers an excellent, collaborative working environment. We have a young, dedicated staff with expertise in a number of areas, particularly in genomics. We maintain extensive computational resources and have access to the university’s high-performance computer systems. As a group, we value (inter)national collaboration and strive for excellence in education and research. Our teaching portfolio covers (advanced) MSc courses and thesis projects in the Master’s Programme in Bioinformatics, introductory courses in a bioinformatics minor, and data science courses at various levels. Our group is strongly embedded in the Plant Sciences Group, collaborates intensively with Wageningen Research and is involved in the efforts of Wageningen University & Research to promote the use and development of data science in its research areas.

You will work within the Wageningen tenure-track system, which provides an excellent opportunity for academic development. It offers support for personal growth in research, acquisition, education (University Teaching Qualification), and leadership. If you fulfil the requirements, you will get tenured as an associate professor after six years of tenure track as an assistant professor. However, you can continue to grow into the role of personal professor. We offer a meaningful job with, depending on your experience, a competitive salary from a minimum of € 3.637 to a maximum of € 6.738 for a full working week of 38 hours, in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement. The contract will be for 32-40 hours per week and will initially be temporary, leading to a permanent employment contract if you meet the tenure track criteria.

  • an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% fixed-year allowance;

The Bioinformatics Group develops novel computational methods for the representation, analysis and integration of biological data, to understand how the interplay of genomes, transcripts, proteins and metabolites results in the phenotypic complexity observed in living systems. We seek to be recognized (inter)nationally for our expertise in three main research areas: reconstruction and analysis of complex genomes, mining specialized metabolism in (meta)genomes, and predicting phenotype from genotype and vice versa. In each of these research lines, we work at three levels: development of fundamental algorithms, dissemination in the form of computational tools and databases, and application on relevant biological problems.
