Associate Director, Technical Accounting

The Role:

This is an exciting role and opportunity to be a key member of the Accounting organization supporting a dynamic and high growth organization that is radically changing the biotechnology industry. The Associate Director, Technical Accounting is a critical member of the Financial Reporting team and will report to the Director, SEC Reporting &Technical Accounting. This position will work across the organization and is responsible for providing oral and written communication with internal stakeholders and external auditors on technical accounting matters, financial reporting, and accounting policies. As the subject matter expert on all technical accounting topics, the individual is responsible for research, documentation, implementation of FASB pronouncements as well as working on external financial reporting to support our SEC filings. This position will partner with finance and non-finance key stakeholders on monthly and quarterly financial reporting and close activities, as well as supporting decision support analyses and other ad-hoc projects.

The successful candidate must have public company experience, implemented recent/new FASB accounting standards, familiar with and worked with SOX controls, this role will partner with FP&A and other functional teams to ensure adequate touch points to operationalize new accounting standards.

Here's What You'll Do:
  • Analyze and author position papers for significant and non-standard transactions by properly identifying accounting implications of various explicit terms and implied nuances, applying appropriate accounting rules and literature and exercising judgement in subjective areas to draw reasonable and acceptable conclusion.
  • Responsible for technical accounting research and whitepapers. Review, interpret and develop accounting policies to ensure compliance with company policies and procedures, GAAP, Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and other regulatory requirements. Ensure clear and concise written documentation of accounting conclusions and accounting policies.
  • Serve as subject matter expert for all technical accounting topics, including revenue recognition (ASC 606) and lease accounting (ASC 842). Responsible for creation of accounting models for revenue recognition, lease accounting and other accounting topics.
  • Lead new accounting standard adoption and process implementation, including adoption of 842 in 2019. Build and strengthen working relationships and scale with the growth of business teams to ensure successful integration with various business functions. Communication with internal stakeholders and external auditors and provide training to cross-functional teams on technical accounting matters, financial reporting, and accounting policies. Present and explain accounting in a concise and easy-to-understand manner to Executive Committee, Project Team Leads, and other senior leaders within organization.
  • Assist in quarterly and annual external financial reporting, including Forms 10-Qs ,10-Ks and 8-Ks tie-out documentation
  • Responsible for the maintaining current list of contract obligations and create accounting summaries for key contracts.
  • Assist in the Company's Sarbanes-Oxley compliance development efforts. Ensure compliance with the SOX controls applicable to the technical accounting, revenue recognition, and external reporting processes
  • Provide accounting support for special projects and ad-hoc reporting and analysis as necessary

Here's What You'll Bring to the Table:
  • Bachelor's degree required, accounting concentration preferred
  • CPA required, MBA in Accounting a plus
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in public accounting, or a mix of public accounting and industry/public company experience.
  • Big 4 Public Accounting experience is highly preferred
  • Pharma/Biotech experience is highly preferred
  • Strong experience in technical accounting, writing position papers and leading accounting standard implementation
  • Strong knowledge of US GAAP and SOX internal controls and compliance
  • Strong knowledge of life science accounting transactions, including collaborations
  • SEC reporting experience is a plus, and working knowledge of SOX internal controls
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong team player and collaboration. Ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Expert Excel skills. High proficiency in Word and PowerPoint.
  • Proactive, responsive and timely problem solver with outstanding project management skills, pays attention to detail, drives processes and meets deadlines.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across functional teams
