With nation-wide responsibility for improving the health and well being of all Americans, the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) oversees the biomedical research programs of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and those of NIH's research Institutes.
The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), a major research component of the NIH and DHHS, is recruiting an outstanding experienced scientist to serve as Chief, Office of Laboratory Animal Science (OLAS). The Chief of OLAS is responsible for ensuring compliance with all federal laws, regulations and standards within NIAAA’s animal care and use program and facilities. The Chief has the authority to ensure the provision of adequate veterinary care and oversees the adequacy of other aspects of animal care and use for all animals acquired and maintained by NIAAA. The Chief manages the animal care and use program of the NIAAA including: 1) supervising the overall program of laboratory animal housing, care, and management to ensure compliance and managing a preventive medicine program for disease control; 2) advising the research staff on all aspects of the use of animals in experiments, including experimental design, surgical and pre- and post-operative care, and experimental techniques; 3) reviewing animal study proposals, conducting semi-annual inspections of facilities, compiling required reports, and maintaining files of animal usage; 4) overseeing all animal acquisition; 5) participating on NIH committees pertaining to animal care and use; and 6) facilitating NIAAA compliance with the Division of Safety’s animal exposure program.
The successful candidate must have a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree with training or experience in laboratory animal science and medicine. Salary is commensurate with experience and accomplishments, and a full Federal package of benefits is available.
