The Lilly RNA Therapeutics Team is seeking an experienced and inspiring scientific leader to join our growing, fast-paced, interdisciplinary team as we leverage novel RNA/oligonucleotide based therapeutic modalities to enhance the Lilly portfolio. Do you have a passion for RNA/oligonucleotide therapeutic discovery and development? Reporting to the Global Head of RNA Chemistry, you will utilize your knowledge in key areas to establish core capabilities, discover novel chemistries for tissue/cell specific delivery and controlled intracellular release of oligonucleotides, and guide the discovery and development of RNA-based clinical candidates..

Key facets of the role are setting strategy and scientific direction for RNA Therapeutics at Lilly, assembling and progressing an innovative preclinical portfolio with focus on scientific rigor and portfolio effectiveness, and building and maintaining state-of-the art expertise in major oligonucleotide-based modalities, with an emphasis on innovative approaches with potential for breakthrough efficacy.

You will drive collaboration and communication both within RNA therapeutics and also across the breadth of the Lilly organization to achieve the company's objectives for future pipeline growth.

Platform Leadership
  • Provide leadership on approaches to improve the mechanistic understanding of different modalities of RNA/oligonucleotide based therapeutics and lead the team in the discovery and development of the next generation of oligonucleotide therapeutics.
  • Lead the efforts in the discovery of novel delivery platform(s) for efficient cell type specific deliveries of RNA/oligonucleotides
  • Lead the efforts in novel conjugation chemistry discovery/development
  • Partner with chemistry team to establish internal oligonucleotide synthesis capability to support both partnered programs and internal efforts.
  • Maintain an awareness of key opportunities in the external landscape, across the industry, in addition to competitor approaches to oligonucleotide discovery and development.
  • Participate in LRL-wide initiatives.

People Leadership
  • Work with cross-functional project teams providing budgets, updates, and project management support required to achieve pre-clinical discovery and clinical development goals and timelines.
  • Maintain a high scientific profile for the group by encouraging participation in scientific exchange, publications and presentations.
  • Interacting with external oligonucleotide CMOs to lead collaborations, assist with troubleshooting, and facilitate technology transfer as needed.
  • Manage, coach, and develop direct reports and be an active participant in the interview and selection process for future hires

Basic Qualifications

  • PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry or relevant scientific discipline with a minimum of 4 years experience in the pharmaceutical or related industry in the area of Oligonucleotide therapeutics

Additional Skills/Preferences

  • Experience in oligonucleotide discovery/development is preferred
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Pharmaceutical Discovery, Development and Intellectual Property Processes.
  • Experience in leading groups of researchers including Ph.D. level scientists
  • Clear understanding of regulatory environments, pharmaceutical standards of care in target markets, critical relationships, and emerging technologies to provide Lilly with competitive access to potential opportunities of strategic interest.
  • Strong scientific and analytical skills. Demonstrated ability to multitask efficiently, prioritize quickly and bring projects to conclusion. Experience working in a matrixed environment as well as leading and leveraging the matrix and strong project management skills required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to represent Lilly in a highly professional manner.
