Columbia University’s Mortimer B. Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute (the Zuckerman Institute) brings together researchers to explore aspects of mind and brain, through the exchange of ideas and active collaboration. The Zuckerman Institute’s home is the Jerome L. Greene Science Center on Columbia’s new Manhattanville campus. Situated in the heart of Manhattan, at full capacity the Zuckerman Institute will house approximately 50 + laboratories employing a broad range of interdisciplinary approaches to transform our understanding of the mind and brain. In this highly collaborative environment, labs work together to gain critical insights into human health by exploring how the brain develops, performs, endures and recovers from trauma or disease.

A lab within the Zuckerman Institute is seeking to hire a Senior Staff Associate who will be responsible for supervising lab staff working with and training research models, and overseeing all husbandry protocols, lab procedures, and lab safety procedures. The Senior Staff Associate will provide critical support in surgeries performed. The Senior Staff Associate will train and supervise lab personnel ranging from research staff assistants, undergraduate / graduate students and postdoctoral researchers. In addition, the Senior Staff Associate will assist investigators in research activities and carry out assigned laboratory duties according to standard and specified procedures, such as daily animal husbandry.

Responsibilities included but are not limited to the following:

Supervises research staff technicians and junior lab members. Implementing and running studies and behavioral training. Maintaining and ensuring compliance with all animal care protocols, with chemical and drug safety, and all other procedures for the lab. Perform hands-on routine care for the health and safety of the research models. Lead assistant during surgeries, as well as primary responsibility for minimally invasive procedures such as maintenance of implants and catheter cleaning. Additional duties as assigned by PI. Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology or physics or related science or the equivalent in either education, training and experience.

Minimum of eight (8) years of experience working in an animal research environment.

Work experience is expected to complement and enhance the candidate’s qualifications for the role, however the educational requirements outlined in the position scope are required.

Ability to supervise and train other lab personnel is essential.

Previous experience working within a research environment and/or basic science preparations are highly desirable. Qualified candidates must be capable of working independently on husbandry and training duties after being instructed. Ability to work in an organized manner in accordance with established regulations, policies and procedures and having exemplary work ethics are requirements.
