Postdoctoral position in Human Immunology

Post-doctoral position available immediately at University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) to study the fetal T cell response to pathogens, and immunoregulation in the human T cell response to malaria. The Feeney lab is located at the SFGH campus of UCSF and is part of the large and interactive UCSF Immunology Program. Mentoring and collaboration are core values across the UCSF campus, providing an excellent environment for postdoctoral training. 

Our lab studies the human pathogen-specific T cell response and has strong international collaborations, primarily in Uganda. Currently, the major interests of the lab are 1) how the fetus responds to pathogen-derived antigens encountered in utero(e.g. malaria, CMV), 2)how immunoregulatory mechanisms (including IL10-producing Tr1 regulatory cells) interfere with the development of sterile immunity to malaria, and 3)how innate and semi-innate cells, including NK and gamma delta T cells, contribute to the immune response to pathogens such as malaria and CMV. We have established large sample banks of PBMC, cord blood, and placental specimens in order to better understand maternofetal tolerance and the impact of in uteroantigen exposure on fetal immune development, and use techniques including flow and mass cytometry (CyTOF),and genome-wide expression analyses (RNAseq and scRNAseq) to identify correlates of immune protection and pathways of immune regulation. 

Our lab culture is highly collaborative and in addition to leading their own project, the postdoctoral fellow will have opportunities to contribute to other team projects in lab and to develop and participate in external collaborations, as well as mentoring of students and junior lab members as part of career development. Opportunities for international travel, including to our collaborating site in Uganda, will be available. Additional professional development opportunities will be available through affiliation with the newly launched ImmunoX program at UCSF (

We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with a Ph.D.  or M.D. degree who has a strong interest in academic research. Basic knowledge of immunology or infectious diseases is required, and flow cytometry experience is strongly preferred. Experience with RNAseq (library prep, bioinformatic analysis) and/or R programming language are desirable, but not required, and support for bioinformatics training will be provided. The candidate needs to be able to work independently and in a collaborative team, and should have excellent written and oral communication  skills.  

Required Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in immunology, molecular biology, or a relevant discipline 
  • Strong communication skills in English, both written and spoken.
