The University of Chicago's Department of Surgery seeks a mid or senior level, full-time physician-scientist or PhD scientist to join its faculty as associate or full professor.  This individual will have peer-reviewed funded research in our surgical research priorities, cancer, pancreatic disease, trauma/critical care, tissue engineering, microbiome sciences, and transplant biology across all organs (liver, heart, lung, kidney), or in related areas. In addition, the appointee will lead and support specific strategic research development and implementation within the department and serve and the leader of the department’s research agenda and infrastructure, including grant submissions, lab space, shared equipment issues, etc.  Thus, the appointee will have both a successful career as a funded independent principal investigator and  administrative experience as a leader in a research department.  Compensation, academic rank, and tenure are dependent upon qualifications; the position includes a generous package of fringe benefits.

We especially welcome applicants with NIH funding experience and who could begin in 2020.

The Department of Surgery has a rich history of basic and translation science in cancer research, infection pathogenesis, transplant immunology, the molecular physiology of cardiac disease, epithelial and vascular biology as it relates to surgical pathology and clinical outcomes research.

Prior to the start of employment, qualified applicants must (1) meet the criteria for faculty appointment, (2) have completed a doctorate or equivalent, and, if a physician, (3a) be board certified or eligible by the American Board of Surgery and pertinent subspecialty, if applicable (or equivalent), (3b) have completed an accredited fellowship or equivalent training in their respective area of practice, and (3c) be able to obtain permanent and unrestricted Illinois licensure.
