The Department of Genome Sciences currently has an outstanding opportunity for a Principal Technologist at the Center for the Multiplexed Assessment of Phenotype.
The Center for the Multiplex Assessment of Phenotype (CMAP) (www.cmap.gs.washington.edu) currently has an outstanding opportunity for our Principal Technologist. We are a group of 6 University of Washington investigators developing cutting-edge genomic technologies to quantify the effects of human genetic variation at scale. The successful candidate will become a member of the team. Working under the direction of CMAP Co-Directors Drs. Doug Fowler and Stan Fields, the Principal Technologist will help to manage ongoing projects and explore new ones by planning and performing experiments, developing assays and analyzing data. The Principal Technologist will also act as a scientific project manager, coordinating research efforts across CMAP labs, assisting CMAP members in experiments and data analysis, and playing a key role in written deliverables. The successful candidate will be comfortable working independently and taking on leadership roles. CMAP is strongly committed to equity and diversity. The Department of Genome Sciences, part of the University of Washington School of Medicine, focuses on answering critical scientific questions by developing and applying genetic, genomic and computational approaches. In particular, we are making major contributions in the application of genomics to understand the fundamentals of biology and to improve human health and wellbeing. Genome Sciences boasts a collaborative, integrated environment supported by a diversity of academic disciplines. We also work many others both on the UW campus as well as worldwide. The department has been highly successful, expanding since its beginning in 2001 to 47 training, teaching, and research faculty with annual grant awards of $44M in FY18.
40% Project Management:
- Work across CMAP labs to coordinate research efforts, identify barriers to progress and help move projects forward
- Train new CMAP members
- Work with CMAP faculty to gather results, perform meta-analyses, write papers and prepare progress reports
- Perform related duties as required
60% High-risk Technology Development:
- Develop and execute large-scale, high-throughput sequencing-based functional assays
- Analyze data and troubleshoot experiments
- Participate in lab meetings, including presentation of work
- Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, molecular or cellular biology or a related field
- Three years of related laboratory experience in a professional or academic setting.
- Outstanding academic and professional track record
- Innovative and analytical thinker, with a disciplined and organized approach
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with an interest in collaborative work
- Self-motivated, enthusiastic and driven to grow
- Ph. D. in chemistry, molecular or cellular biology or a related field
- Three or more years related professional laboratory experience
- Experience with contemporary molecular biology, functional genomics and large-scale experimental approaches
- Experience with automated microscopy
- Experience with project management
- Experience working in a highly collaborative manner
- Data analysis competency (e.g. using Python, R or equivalent)
