The Department of Environmental Studies [http://envs.ucsc.edu] at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a Field Conservation Ecologist at the assistant professor level.

We seek a field ecologist who uses a mix of natural history observations, field-based monitoring and experiments, strong analytical skills, and theoretical grounding to answer conservation questions across wildlands-agriculture-urban interfaces. We will give preference to a candidate who has taxonomic expertise with at least one of the major terrestrial faunal groups (e.g., birds, insects, herpetofauna, mammals). The ideal candidate will have experience in field-based teaching and innovative and inclusive pedagogical practices. We seek a person who has past experience with and is enthusiastic about future interdisciplinary collaboration with faculty and graduate students within our department and across campus working in conservation biology, agroecology and sustainable agriculture, global change ecology, environmental policy, environmental justice, and/or environmental problem solving.

Applicants with the following qualifications are encouraged to apply: Excellence in research that complements or extends existing research strengths and taxonomic expertise in the department; demonstrated potential to attract extramural funding; evidence of a commitment to excellence in teaching; and evidence of a commitment to or strong potential for commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration with social scientists.

In addition to a strong record of research and teaching excellence, the successful candidate will demonstrate an understanding of the barriers preventing full participation of underrepresented minorities in higher education. The successful candidate will have evidence of teaching, research, or service activities addressing the needs of underrepresented groups, and a clearly articulated vision of how their work at UC Santa Cruz will continue to contribute to the University's mission of serving the needs of our diverse state and student population.

The successful candidate will be expected to: (1) develop a strong research program providing research opportunities for post-doctoral researchers, graduate, and undergraduate students; (2) teach across the curriculum at the undergraduate and graduate level; (3) foster collaborations with interdisciplinary teams within and/or outside the university; (4) engage with important related campus units such as the Norris Center for Natural History, the Center for Integrated Spatial Research (CISR), the Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems (CASFS), and/or the UCSC Natural Reserves; and (5) engage with campus strategic priority areas and design principles (https://sap.ucsc.edu/apa/).
