The Laboratory of Professor William R. Jacobs seeks to understand the mechanisms of immune protection against Mycobacterium tuberculosis, M. leprae, and Herpes viruses. In collaboration with Dr. Betsy Herold, we have made a new single-cycle Herpes vaccine candidate that elicits sterilizing immunity against HSV-1 and HSV-2. The vaccine selectively induces antibodies that mediate antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxic killing. This position will utilize this HSV mutant to generate new vaccines for foreign pathogens including M. tuberculosis and M. leprae.
