EMBL Hamburg is operating two beamlines for macromolecular crystallography (P13 and P14) on the PETRA III synchrotron at DESY (Hamburg, Germany). We are seeking a scientist to join the MX team.

Your role

The post holder will report to the P14 Project Leader, Dr. Gleb Bourenkov and will work in close collaboration with the beamline staff and the Instrumentation Group.

Tasks include:

  • assisting the Project Leader in the development of the beamline, including design, installation, testing, commissioning and maintenance;
  • supporting users on beamlines P13, P14 including the new P14.EH2 endstation including mail-in and remote access;
  • assisting infrastructure management in managing beamline-related projects;
  • preparing and following-up purchases;
  • presenting the beamlines at conferences.

The post-holder will be encouraged to develop own research projects, ideally related to the further development of the beamlines, in particular in view of a possible upgrade of the PETRA synchrotron.

As the beamlines at EMBL Hamburg are operated 24/7 during the PETRA III runs, this position will require your flexibility to work in a two shift schedule during a time frame between 8 am and 8 pm, to cover the support for our users. For evenings or weekends, a defined on-call-duty will be applied. You have Applicants should hold a PhD in a relevant discipline. At least 5 years of practical experience in the design, installation, operation, and trouble-shooting of synchrotron instrumentation are required.

  • excellent communication skills as well as demonstrated presentation skills;
  • excellent command of spoken and written English.

You might also have

  • experience in using non-standard sample environments;
  • experience in the acquisition and analysis of time-resolved data
