The University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix is establishing a Translational Cardiovascular Center of Excellence. This Translational Cardiovascular Research Center will complement growing clinical programs of distinction in advanced heart failure, transplantation, artificial circulatory support, electrophysiology, structural heart disease and others at Banner University Medical Center- Phoenix. We invite applications from accomplished cardiovascular scientists to become the inaugural Director of this Center of Excellence. We seek an experienced and innovative research leader (MD, MD/PhD or PhD) to build a comprehensive, multi-investigator, interdisciplinary translational research center to develop innovative preventive and therapeutic strategies in cardiac and vascular disease. Research laboratories are located in state-of-the-art research facilities with core services. The Director will be expected to develop and direct the research activities of the Center, fostering collaboration with faculty across the College and University. Current cardiovascular research within the College focuses on vascular disease, thrombosis, cardiac cell and extracellular matrix biology and stroke. Candidates in all areas of cardiovascular research, particularly those with a focus on heart failure, are encouraged to apply. Applicants will have an outstanding track record in scholarship and extramural funding as a principal investigator, as well as demonstrated success in program development and mentoring. Professorial and department appointment will be commensurate with candidate’s research discipline, credentials and achievement. Successful candidates will have excellent communication and team building skills. An entrepreneurial focus is desirable.

In addition to recruiting new investigators, the Cardiovascular Center will draw from investigators in the Departments of Medical Sciences, Medicine, Surgery and others, as well as clinicians at the Banner University Medical Center Heart Institute. The successful candidate will promote collaborative research programs within the Colleges as well as with the Sarver Heart Center and other research programs in Tucson. Additional opportunities for collaboration include the University of Arizona Cancer Center, Norton Thoracic Institute, and Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Center for Applied NanoBioscience and Medicine, Translational Genomics Research Institute, and Arizona State University.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop and direct the research activities of the Center, fostering collaboration with faculty across the College and University.
  • Promote collaborative research programs within the Colleges as well as with the Sarver Heart Center and other research programs in Tucson.
  • Build a comprehensive, multi-investigator, interdisciplinary translational research center to develop innovative preventive and therapeutic strategies in cardiac and vascular disease.
