Scientist/ Production Scientist, Institute for Protein Innovation (IPI)

Institute for Protein Innovation (IPI), a nonprofit research organization in the Harvard Medical School/Longwood Medical Area and premier center for protein science, seeks a Production Scientist to be responsible for running and improving upon existing protein production pipelines. The position will also involve managing specific protein and antibody production projects with the goal of providing open source antibodies to the community for testing. The ideal candidate will be capable of performing high-throughput screening and production of a diverse assortment of secreted and non-secreted proteins cultured in HEK cells using several automation platforms. IPI operates a state-of-the-art platform for high-throughput discovery of antibodies targeting the entire human and mouse extracellular proteome that will serve as leads for new therapeutics and open-source research tools. The candidate will play an integral leadership role in shaping the direction of programs at IPI.

Your responsibilities:

  • Express proteins using transient transfection in Expi293 cells using high-throughput, automated liquid handing methods
  • Perform HT screens, hit identification, and data analysis
  • Manage and manipulate hundreds of proteins using automated processes at 384well scale
  • Present reports and results to group meetings
  • Data management using a LIMS
  • Maintain automation systems

Qualifications:

  • PhD in protein chemistry, cell biology, molecular biology, or closely related fields with automation and liquid handling experience
  • Experience with protein characterization techniques such as SDS-PAGE, Western blot, SEC, HPLC
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects
  • Strong communication, interpersonal skills, and leadership is required
  • Adapt to rapid changes in projects priorities and timelines

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with liquid handling platforms (Biomek, Lynx, Tecan, Hamilton)
  • Experience with analytical and developability assays for antibody characterization
  • Knowledge of scripting language (python, etc)
