The Role:

Moderna New Venture Labs in Technology Square, Cambridge, MA is seeking an enthusiastic, experienced and motivated bench-level Scientist to help advance Moderna's innovative autoimmune discovery and early pipeline development efforts. Using Moderna's proprietary mRNA platform, this researcher will redirect and modulate cells of the immune system in ways unachievable by other modalities. The successful candidate will possess strong scientific curiosity and a desire to understand and harness immune regulatory pathways for therapeutic benefit, while possessing a solid mix of in vitro and in vivo skills and hands-on experience, preferably with one or more autoimmune models. Knowledge of cellular immunology and experience with lymphocyte analysis is preferred but not required. Ability to work independently and as part of a small team is essential.

Here's What You'll Do:
  • Bring your passion for science and knowledge of immune regulatory pathways and current immunology literature to identify potential therapeutic targets, and build in vitro assays to test their impact on lymphocyte biology and signaling pathways
  • Design, direct and execute in vivo studies in a variety of disease models, internally and through a network of external partners. Work independently and as part of a fast-moving team of researchers to identify disease indications for preclinical candidates and demonstrate Proof of Biology.
  • Work with internal and external partners/stakeholders to test, optimize and advance therapeutic candidates into early development
  • Partner with other members of the Autoimmunity team to build capabilities and identify translatable endpoints in preclinical models

Here's What You'll Bring To The Table:
  • Master's degree in relevant field with 5+ years post-baccalaureate experience, or PhD with 1-2 years' relevant experience. Job title and grade level will be commensurate with experience and skillset
  • A strong background in immunology, ideally with current knowledge of regulatory T cells or innate myeloid cells. Must be motivated to stay on top of the literature.
  • Experience in both in vivo preclinical disease models, and in vitro cellular techniques including flow cytometry, ELISAs, Westerns, Luminex or other immunoassay techniques; gene expression by qRT-PCR, and cell culture and cell transduction.
  • Experience with standard programs for data analysis and visualization, basic statistical analysis
  • Attention to detail, scientific versatility, flexibility, results oriented, with effective communication skills
  • Candidate will embrace our core values. You will be curious in exploring new paths for immune modulation, bold in proposing creative experimental designs and ideas. You will work collaboratively with multifunctional teams and will be relentless in pursuing successful outcomes.

Here's What We'll Bring to the Table:
  • Daily on-site catered lunches
  • Company-provided iPhone
  • Free parking, monthly subway pass or a subsidized commuter rail pass

  • Adoption assistance and discounts to local childcare centers, as well as access to care.com
  • 401k (traditional and Roth offered) with 50% match on first 6% deferred. Match is vested immediately
  • A suite of Moderna paid insurance coverage, including: life insurance, short-term and long-term disability

  • 15 days' vacation and 7 sick days per year, in addition to a discretionary winter shut down and 11 company paid holidays (includes 2 floating holidays)

Why join Moderna

At Moderna, we believe messenger RNA, or mRNA, is the "software of life." Every cell in the body uses mRNA to provide real-time instructions to make the proteins necessary to drive all aspects of biology, including in human health and disease. Given its essential role, we believe mRNA could be used to create a new category of medicines with significant potential to improve the lives of patients.

Headquartered in Cambridge, Mass., Moderna currently has strategic alliances for development programs with AstraZeneca, Plc. and Merck, Inc., as well as the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), an agency of the U.S. Department of Defense; and the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), a division of the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR) within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Moderna has been ranked in the top ten of Science's list of top biopharma industry employers for the past four years. To learn more, visit www.modernatx.com .
