A postdoctoral fellow position is available in the Cardiovascular Research Training Program (CRTP) at the University of New Mexico (UNM) Health Sciences Center (HSC), funded by a T32 grant from the NIH National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI). The goal of the CRTP is to provide exceptional pre- and post-doctoral trainees a broad, multidisciplinary background in cardiovascular and pulmonary research with integration between basic and clinical sciences. This research program provides a rich academic training environment, including the resources, technical approaches, communication skills, and professional interactions that will aid the trainee becoming an independent investigator in cardiovascular research.

The following CRTP laboratories currently have open positions:

Dr. Nikki L. Jernigan: Current projects focus on the contribution of acid sensing ion channels to metabolic-mitochondrial dysfunction in the hypertensive pulmonary circulation. A variety of experimental approaches will be utilized in these studies including whole animal hemodynamics, ultrasound imaging, isolated perfused lungs, dimensional analysis of isolated, pressurized small pulmonary arteries, electrophysiology, and molecular and mitochondrial biology.

Dr. Matthew J. Campen: The Campen laboratory is interested in the systemic vascular health effects of inhaled toxicants.  Funded studies include understanding how diverse air pollutants such as ozone, ambient particulate matter, and nanomaterials promote mechanisms leading to placental insufficiency and impairment of blood brain barrier.  

Minimum requirements: PhD or MD degree. Applications are restricted to U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

Preferred qualifications: Research experience in cardiovascular physiology or toxicology; strong publication record; excellent communication and laboratory skills. 

The fellow will be responsible for planning and executing experiments, collecting and analyzing data, participating in manuscript preparation, and developing postdoctoral and early career grant proposals.

      The CRTP T32 provides an NIH level stipend, and allowances for tuition and fees, health insurance, training-related expenses, and travel to scientific meetings.  Appointments are for 2-3 years, with subsequent support provided by individual training fellowships or mentored career awards.
