Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) – The Research University in the Helmholtz Association creates and imparts knowledge for the society and the environment. It is our goal to make significant contributions to mastering the global challenges of mankind in the fields of energy, mobility, and information. For this, about 9300 employees of KIT cooperate in a broad range of disciplines in research, academic education, and innovation.

In Division V – Physics and Mathematics – the KIT Department of Physics invites applications for a

Tenure-track-professorship for Electron Microscopy (W1)

at the Laboratory for Electron Microscopy. This Tenure-track-professorship (W1) is funded by the ”Bund-Länder-Program for the Promotion of Young Scientists“; additional support is expected from the Excellence Cluster ”3D Matter Made to Order“.

We are seeking for a scientist in an early career stage with the potential to represent the field of electron microscopy in research and teaching. The field of research comprises electron microscopy and electron spectroscopy – without any restriction to a specific material class – as well as application-oriented development of electron microscopic techniques.

The professorship is embedded within the KIT Department of Physics; however, scientists with other scientific backgrounds are explicitly invited to apply as well. The Tenure-track-professorship (W1) implies appropriate teaching and administrative obligations. You combine a cooperative and interdisciplinary work approach with strong communication skills. Non-German-speaking applicants should be prepared to learn the language and teach in German after a reasonable time.

According to § 51 of the Universities Act (Landeshochschulgesetz) of the state of Baden-Württemberg the recruitment requirements include a university degree, pedagogical aptitude and a special aptitude for scientific work, which is usually demonstrated by a doctorate of outstanding quality. Employment will initially be for a period of six years as a temporary civil servant or as an employee; in the fourth year a midterm evaluation will be carried out. In case of a positive final tenure evaluation, you will be appointed to a permanent full professorship (W3) for electron microscopy. The evaluation procedure and general criteria are defined in the ”Qualitätssicherungskonzept für Juniorprofessuren und Tenure-Track-Professuren am Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT)“. Of particular importance are own visible contributions to the field of research, internal and external interdisciplinary cooperations, third-party funding, successful teaching and supervision of young scientists.

KIT is an equal opportunity employer. Women are especially encouraged to apply. Applicants with disabilities will be preferentially considered if equally qualified. KIT is a certified family-friendly university and offers part-time employment, leave of absence due to family reasons, dual-career service and coaching to support balance between family and career. For your career development KIT offers an accompanying procedure and mentoring.

Applications with the usual information (including curriculum vitae, summary of teaching experience and thirdparty funding, research plan and three most important publications) should be sent by June 23, 2019 to: Dekan der KIT-Fakultät für Physik, Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT), 76128 Karlsruhe, Germany, in electronic form as one pdf document to dekanat@physik.kit.edu. For informal inquiries please contact Mrs. Prof. Dr. Dagmar Gerthsen, phone: +49 721 608-43200, email: dagmar.gerthsen@kit.edu.
