Tier I Canada Research Chair in Precision & Molecular Oncology

The Department of Oncology in conjunction with the Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute, Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary, invite applications for an appointment with Tenure at the Associate Professor or Professor level in Precision and Molecular Oncology. The selected candidate will be Nominated for a Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR) Tier 1 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Precision and Molecular Oncology.  Further information about the Canada Research Chairs Program can be found on the Government of Canada’s CRC website, including eligibility criteria. 

Qualifications for appointment at the level of Associate Professor include a PhD with five to ten years’ board certified experience in the field of molecular and precision Oncology, with additional training/experience in a field related to translational and basic science Oncology research.  A proven track record demonstrating research excellence including a strong publication record, evidence of successful teaching and supervision, evidence of established academic engagement/leadership and national level research grant success is mandatory.  

Qualifications for appointment at the level of Professor include a PhD with more than ten years board certified training in the field of molecular and precision Oncology, with additional training/experience in a field related to translational and basic science Oncology research. A proven track record demonstrating research excellence and national level research grant success is mandatory. Applications at the Professor level must provide evidence of an outstanding academic publication record, successful teaching and supervision record; and evidence of outstanding academic service and/or leadership.

The successful candidate will join a cancer research environment at the University of Calgary that is rapidly expanding in anticipation of the opening of a New Calgary Cancer Centre (NCCC) in Calgary in 2023. The NCCC will have over 110,000 square feet of purpose built wet and dry research. Areas of research emphasis will include, but are not limited to, precision oncology and experimental therapeutics, early cancer detection, immune oncology, cancer epidemiology and prevention, psychosocial oncology and survivorship, childhood cancer and blood disorders, and investigator-driven programs in cancers of the lung, breast, prostate, colon, brain and multiple myeloma, among others. This recruitment will complement a growing emphasis on precision and molecular oncology. Other strengths in the environment are a university-wide genomics and bioinformatics initiative led by the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute, and in addition to Charbonneau, six large health research institutes at the University of Calgary, headquartered within the Cumming School of Medicine. 

The successful candidate will be expected to lead a vibrant research program with substantial external funding from the CIHR or other prestigious national cancer research funding agencies and groups and have a history of training and scholarship in the application of molecular science to cancer care and sufficient stature in their field to contribute to Eyes High Strategy of the University of Calgary.
