A Research Scientist position with a focus on electrophysiology is available in the Division of Preclinical Innovation (DPI) of the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS), National Institutes of Health (NIH), at its intramural laboratories in Rockville, Maryland.

The selected Research Scientist will work in a highly creative and collaborative team environment as an expert electrophysiologist for advancing drug discovery and development projects. The candidate should have extensive experience in single-channel, whole-cell, and brain slice recording and culturing techniques. This research scientist will establish and operate a state-of-the-art "Electrophysiology Hub" supporting projects across the entire NCATS intramural research program. Experimental preparations will include primary neurons and brain tissues, as well as iPSC-derived neurons, organoids, and bio-printed tissues. Areas supported will include the Helping to End Addiction Long-Term (HEAL) program focusing on new therapeutic development for opioid addiction, overdose, and pain management. For these and other project areas, DPI routinely partners with external collaborators to form multidisciplinary project teams with expertise in assay development, high-throughput screening (HTS), bioinformatics analysis, medicinal chemistry, disease-relevant biological models, and preclinical drug development.

This scientist will communicate results to project team members and collaborators, and provide updates to senior management. He/she will keep accurate and complete records of all scientific experiments according to established procedures, and ensure that these records and raw data are properly retained. This scientist will write technical reports, manuscripts and patent applications.


Position requires a Ph.D. degree in an electrophysiology-relevant field with 3 to 5 years of postdoctoral experience. Experience in drug development and optimization is highly desirable. The candidate should be an independent thinker and team player able to work in a very interactive high pace environment, well trained in methods and concepts of electrophysiology. Experience is required in patch-clamping and/or brain slice electrophysiology. Strong communication skills, productive publication record, and experience in stem cells are preferred.
