RESEARCH SCIENTIST, DHVI

The Duke Human Vaccine Institute (DHVI) continues to lead with cutting edge research to combat infectious diseases that impact global health.  The investigators at the DHVI conduct basic and translational research to develop novel vaccines, therapeutics and diagnostics for emerging pathogens, such as HIV-1, tuberculosis, influenza, malaria, cytomegalovirus, zika, chikungunya etc.

The Laboratory of Neonatal Viral Pathogen Immunity leads research in immunologic prevention of congenital and neonatal infections against neonatal viral pathogens, including HIV-1, CMV, Zika, and Rotavirus, identifying immune correlates of protection and testing vaccine strategies in preclinical models. We are recruiting a Research Scientist to oversee immunology aspects of the program and work closely with Dr. Permar to oversee the day-to-day research laboratory activities of technicians and students to meet the specific goals of the laboratory:

  • Develop and validate assays to measure T and B cell responses in mother and infant pairs and animal models against HIV, CMV, Rotavirus, and Zika
  • Design and implement studies of immune correlates of protection against vertical transmission of viral pathogens
  • Assist in the design and oversee studies to assess the role of maternal immune responses in protection against placental infection nonhuman primate model of congenital CMV infection
  • Oversee reagent development for measuring immune responses in required assays, such as antibody and protein production
  • Work with students and technicians to developing their experimental designs and troubleshoot their experiments
  • Quality control data generated by the laboratory for sharing with collaborators and publication

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

Activities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Design, develop and execute all required assays and model systems to meet the milestones of the research program:
  • Measure binding and functional antibody responses
  • Identify and isolate virus-specific B cells for monoclonal antibody characterization
  • Assess functional T cell responses in human and animal models
  • Facilitate collaborations/interactions with the other scientific teams and collaborators/subcontractors working on this project.
  • Develop and implement standard operating procedures and lead in qualification and validation efforts for assays and procedures
  • Plan, organize, and conduct research projects with PI approval.
  • Research new products, tests, and methods and report on relative feasibility, quality, and benefits of new developments.
  • Collate, analyze, and quality control complex data sets.
  • Organize and present data sets to the PI and programmatic Leadership Teams.
  • Summarize completed protocols and studies; write scientific articles and manuscripts for publication and presentation.
  • Supervise and mentor lab staff, students, and fellows in the laboratory.
  • Monitor progress of research projects and coordinate with the Program Manager to stay on budget and schedule to meet the program milestones and deliverables.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

PhD or equivalent doctorate (e.g., Sc.D, M.D., D.M.V.), 5+ years of postdoctoral training or experience conducting scientific research in the field of immunology with multiple publications; Expertise in both cellular and molecular immunology techniques.
