The Department of Microbiology and Immunology (MIC), F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine invites applications for the position of Assistant or Associate Professor (tenure eligible track). The mission of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology is to teach microbiology and immunology to medical students, graduate students, and postdoctoral trainees and to carry out research and scholarly activities that expand the frontiers of knowledge in microbiology and immunology.

Duties: Serves as an Assistant/Associate Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology (MIC) and as such is responsible for teaching, research and administrative assignments. In coordination with other faculty members of the Department, the incumbent will assist in the planning and development of curriculum for the Department of MIC. Supervises groups of medical students, interns, residents and postdoctoral researchers, graduate assistants at the tutorial level in the laboratory. Responsible for teaching new research techniques, use of appropriate instruments and equipment, and statistical and analytical procedures. Prepares materials for presentation, provides daily supervision, and reviews student performance. Serves as advisor to predoctoral students and postdoctoral researchers in guiding their training research programs.  Prepares and presents lectures in area of major expertise to the entire student body. Writes and obtains funding to support research work. Is expected to establish an independent and externally funded research program.  Directs and participates in research work at bench level daily and is responsible for data review and analysis from individuals within his/her area of responsibility.

Minimum Qualifications: Position requires a minimum of a Ph.D. or M.D. degree and postdoctoral experience, plus substantial experience in research and development in the areas of emerging viral diseases, virus-host cell interactions, viral pathogenesis, virus assembly, and/or viral immunology. The successful candidate must also have experience in medical school/graduate teaching, educational administration, personnel management, expertise and experience as reflected by a significant number of scientific publications in critically reviewed scientific journals as appropriate to his/her research, and possess active membership in scholarly societies appropriate to the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. U.S. Citizenship is required.
