About the role

In this role, you will investigate the mechanisms of context fear learning and memory modulation. This project will involve assessing animal behaviour at various stages of memory, in conjunction with assessments of molecular, cellular and circuit changes within hippocampal-neocortical circuits.

You will be willing and able to work with mice and rodents in a number of paradigms, including, but not limited to, monitoring and sacrificing mice, complex behavioural paradigms such as context fear conditioning, surgical techniques such as stereotaxic surgeries and intracerebral cannulation survival surgeries.

Other aspects of the work will include confocal and two-photon microscope imaging of cells and synapses, in vivo calcium imaging and optogenetic and chemogenetic techniques to establish causal links between behavioural and cellular alterations and memory and behaviour.

About the Centre

The Centre for Neuroscience and Regenerative Medicine is a priority initiative of UTS, aiming to become a sustainable, world-leading hub of research excellence. The Research Fellow (Learning and Memory) will support the Centre in this endeavour, including the development of research funding applications and contribution to world-standard research outcomes.

The Centre, led by Professor Bryce Vissel, pursues research in the neuroscience of cognition, movement and related neurological diseases. The Centre is divided into various overlapping and complementary research streams, directed to high impact scientific research related to understanding the underlying molecular and cellular mechanisms involved. About you

To be successful in securing this role you will have:

  • A PhD in Neuroscience or a related discipline (required)
  • Knowledge of memory formation, consolidation, extinction, updating and reconsolidation mechanisms
  • Knowledge of the neural circuits and molecular underpinnings of memory
  • Extensive experience in conception, design and performance of neuroscience research, specifically context fear conditioning, stereotaxic surgery and intracerebral infusions
  • Experience with optogenetics, chemogenetics and/or in vivo calcium imaging approaches
  • Experience in writing ethics applications, statements for funding bodies and manuscripts for scientific journals
  • Experience supervising and managing students and research assistants

Remuneration & Benefits

Base Salary Range: $103,981 to $123,067 pa (Level B)

This role attracts 17% superannuation (pension) in addition to the base salary.

This position is full-time and appointment will be made on a fixed term basis for 3 years.
