The University of Cologne, Faculty of Medicine, posts the position of a

Professorship (W2) for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

(tenure track, temporary, with option for consolidation in case of positive evaluation)

as per the requirements outlined in § 36 of the Universities act of North Rhine-Westphalia (HG NRW). The position is to be filled by October 1, 2020.

This call is part of the Tenure Track Programme of the German Federal Government and the Federal States. It addresses researchers at an early career stage.

The professorship is part of the newly established Center for Biomedicine at the Medical Faculty of the University of Cologne. The joint structure of the Center integrates theoretical institutes of the Faculty of Medicine to promote excellence and foster interdisciplinarity in research and teaching. The successful candidate actively participates in biochemistry and molecular biology teaching for medical students. The primary objective of the new appointment is the development of an internationally competitive research programme that strongly enhances and complements the focus research areas of the Medical Faculty. The prospective candidate is expected to develop close co-operations with the local Max Planck Institutes for Biology of Ageing and Metabolism, UoC located Collaborative Research Centers and/or Research Units, the Cologne Excellence Cluster CECAD, the Cologne Center for Genomics (CCG), Biochemistry of the Science Faculty, the Center of Molecular Medicine Cologne (CMMC), the Center for Integrated Oncology (CIO) and Metabolism Research and the Research Center Jülich.

The successful candidate is expected to have an outstanding record of academic achievements in biochemistry, molecular and/or cell biology. Scientific excellence and a particular commitment to teach medical, dental, biochemistry and neurosciences students in the subject of biochemistry and the motivation to actively contribute to the development of the model course of medicine of the Faculty of Medicine are presumed. The Faculty of Medicine seeks to appoint a candidate with an excellent track record in research and teaching. Social skills, the capacity to work in multidisciplinary teams and to apply successfully for third-party research funds are prerequisites. Further requirements for application include a postdoctoral lecturer qualification (Habilitation or equivalent), extensive academic teaching experience and mastering of the German language.

At the latest in the fifth year after entering into office, a final evaluation will be held according to the Regulations for Quality Assurance in Tenure Track Procedures at the University of Cologne. On this basis, a decision will be reached as to whether the candidate will be given tenure at W2 level.
