Job Details

At UTS’ Centre for Neuroscience and Regenerative Medicine (CNRM), we're dedicated to helping those suffering from the debilitating conditions of the brain, mind and spinal cord.

We’re spearheading ground-breaking new programs that will revolutionise the treatment of Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, mental health, MND and spinal injuries, ultimately aimed at delivering impact to millions of people.

Led by Professor Bryce Vissel, the Centre is delivering results previously never thought possible, in line with its vision is to create a sustainable, world-leading hub of excellence.

About the role

As the Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Alzheimer’s Disease you will be a cell biologist with strong experience in protein and cell signalling studies, in neuroscience and rodent models, able to conduct research to elucidate the mechanisms of Alzheimer’s disease.

You will support other cell biology studies in the team and investigate novel pharmacological approaches that may ultimately alleviate neurodegenerative, neuroinflammatory and behavioural alterations in these conditions.

You will be responsible for undertaking laboratory research both independently and as directed by Professor Vissel and will generate quality scientific data in a timely and professional manner for submission to high profile journals. You will also be expected to use your knowledge and expertise to develop innovative ideas and experiments and to maintain knowledge of the relevant literature in order to understand how to apply this knowledge to you own project.

You will be expected to be willing and able to work with mice and rodents in a number of paradigms including, but not limited to, survival strategies, monitoring and sacrifice, as well as behavioural, surgical, anatomical, immunohistochemical, and molecular biological studies. Other aspects of the position will include learning and developing cell biological techniques that may not already established in the group and subsequent instruction to other lab members.

The position involves working with hazardous and, in some circumstances, highly neurotoxic chemicals such as kainic acid, amyloid-beta, MPTP, and 6-OHDA. It is expected that the PDRF will research and understand the safety implications of the chemicals being used and will ensure that all procedures are developed and/or followed to guarantee high standards of safety for themselves and their colleagues.

To be successful in securing the role, you will have:

  • A PhD in Neuroscience
  • A high level of knowledge in the field of neuroscience, synapses and/or neurodegeneration, preferably in Alzheimer’s disease
  • Minimum 5 years experience (may include PhD studies) in cell signalling and/or protein trafficking (preferably as related to synaptic function) and the relevant techniques
  • Strong knowledge of, experimental design in cell signaling and protein trafficking, and ability to write, assist with research grants, ethics applications and scientific papers etc
  • Experience in animal research, including colony maintenance and in vivo studies, as well as animal ethics and reporting
  • Experience supervising and managing students and research assistants
  • Demonstrated experience in stroke and Alzheimer’s disease research and successful leadership of research projects resulting in first author publications consistent with this experience.
