We are interested in recruiting a highly accomplished scientist to take this unique position of high national interest. The successful candidate will be an expert in the physical and material sciences, while being capable of managing a broad portfolio of research programs that encompass the life sciences, physical sciences and engineering.  The CSO will be part of a team that implements the strategic vision and research/technology agenda for the most effective utilization of the U.S. National Lab on the International Space Station.

The ISS offers striking opportunities for major cross-disciplinary and integrative projects in both science and engineering and, accordingly, the candidate should have experience in initiating and managing large projects. A major focus of the National Lab’s research will be the translation of applied research projects into commercially viable opportunities for the industrialization of low earth orbit.

The CSO will work closely with the President and Executive Director on developing and implementing comprehensive programs. They will expand the existing and build new strategic directions for improving health and wellness, fostering discovery in all fields of scientific research and STEM education.

The CSO will serve as the primary contact with the NASA ISS Chief Scientist to promote the collaborative effort between CASIS and NASA on developing the capabilities for science, technology and education, as well as an interface to Principal Investigators and commercial partners to support their research or technology development plans.

Essential Leadership Characteristics and Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of challenges facing the role of the ISS National Laboratory.
  • A strong understanding of the development cycle from applied research to productization.
  • A demonstrated familiarity with the workings and interactions in political, cultural and legislative landscapes with those that govern the aspects of Space Station oversight.
  • An understanding of the 501(c)(3) structure and the importance of cooperation with other related departments, agencies and interested parties.
  • Results proven track record of exceeding goals and a bottom-line orientation; evidence of the ability to consistently make good decisions through a combination of analysis, wisdom, experience, and judgment; high level of business acumen, the ability to balance the delivery of programs against the realities of a budget.
  • Ability to think strategically, anticipate future consequences and trends, and incorporate them into the organizational plan.
  • Exceptional capacity for managing and leading people.
  • Action Oriented - enjoys working hard and looks for challenges; able to act and react as necessary, even if limited information is available; not afraid to take charge of a situation; can overcome resistance to leadership and take unpopular stands when necessary

Professional Experience and Qualification Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in materials science, materials engineering, or related field, with 10+ years of research experience
  • Proven experience with research and development activities undertaken by corporations or governments in developing new services or products, or improving existing services or products
  • Excellent interpersonal and public speaking skills, ability to make effective and persuasive presentations on controversial or complex topics to varying audiences which may include NASA, Congress, National Space Council, various stakeholders and partners, etc.

In 2011, the Center for Advancement of Science in Space, a nonprofit, non-government organization, was selected as the manager of this incredible research facility, with a focus on enabling a new era of space research to improve life on Earth. In this innovative role, the ISS National Lab is charged with promoting and brokering a diverse range of research in life sciencesphysical sciencesremote sensingtechnology development, and education.

Since 2011, the ISS National Lab has selected more than 300 ISS research projects, ranging from developing new drug therapies to monitoring tropical cyclones, improving equipment for first-responders, and producing unique fiber-optics materials in space. This research portfolio represents a growing community of researchers taking their scientific dreams beyond the limits of gravity.
