Director, Massey Cancer Center

Jeanette and Eric Lipman Chair in Oncology

Virginia Commonwealth University

Richmond, Virginia

Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) seeks a collaborative and transformative leader to serve as the next Director of the Massey Cancer Center (MCC or Massey). The Director will also hold the endowed Jeanette and Eric Lipman Chair in Oncology professorship. This is an exciting opportunity to lead a National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated cancer center at the forefront of discovery and innovation.

Founded in 1974, MCC’s 44 years of continuous support from NCI make it the first NCI-designated cancer center in Virginia. Massey’s most recent NCI renewal extends through 2022 and includes a Cancer Center Support Grant of $11 million to support research, clinical trials, education, and community outreach. Investigators at Massey include more than 200 scientists and physician researchers with appointments representing 32 academic departments across VCU. MCC’s programmatic research strengths include cancer prevention and control, tobacco research, developmental therapeutics, cancer cell signaling, and cancer health disparities. In 2018, Massey was awarded $38.4 million in sponsored research funding.

Clinicians at Massey care for more than 15,000 patients in Richmond and Central Virginia each year. Construction is underway for a new adult outpatient facility slated to open in 2021 with a dedicated and highly visible wing for MCC. VCU Health is also in the early design stages of a new inpatient facility with a completion date of approximately 2027. The next Director will be invited to provide input on the workflow design as well as the patient and provider experience in the new outpatient and inpatient MCC space.

Reporting directly to the Senior Vice President of Health Sciences and CEO of the $4 billion integrated VCU Health System, the Director will work collaboratively with leaders across the university and the health system to position Massey as a top regional provider of cancer patient care, research, prevention and control, and education. This individual will align Massey’s research priorities to address the needs of underserved populations in the catchment area and ensure that MCC’s goals are in synch with those of VCU Health and the University. In setting ambitious goals toward these objectives, the Director will position Massey to become the first NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in Virginia.

The successful Director must hold an MD, PhD, MD/PhD or equivalent degree and qualify for a position as a tenured faculty member in the School of Medicine at VCU. The Director will have a successful track record as a leader, scholar, and academic administrator within a cancer center environment as well as a distinguished record of scientific achievements.

VCU has retained Isaacson, Miller, a national executive search firm, to assist in the recruitment of the next MCC Director. Applications, inquiries, and nominations may be submitted at www.imsearch.com/6885. All applications must also be submitted to VCU Jobs at https://www.vcujobs.com/postings/89002.

VCU is an affirmative action, equal opportunity employer.

Women, minorities and persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply.
