Assistant Controller

The Role:

The Assistant Controller is a key leadership position within Finance at Moderna, a dynamic and high growth organization that has recently completed its IPO and is radically changing the biotechnology industry through using messenger RNA, or mRNA, to develop medicines. The Assistant Controller will report to and function as the "right hand" to the Controller, and has leadership accountability over significant aspects of Moderna's accounting operations, key business processes, the financial close, financial consolidation and statutory accounting, accounting policies, and the related SOX internal controls. In addition, s/he will partner with the external financial reporting and technical accounting team to ensure accurate and compliant external reporting, and support the implementation of new accounting standards, new collaboration deals or new significant transactions to ensure these are properly reflected on our books.

As an organizational leader s/he is responsible for team members' individual development. S/he will inspire, motivate, and promote a results-oriented focus in others and earn the confidence and credibility to partner with his/her team, senior leaders, external auditors and other business process stakeholders.

The Assistant Controller will play a key role in driving process improvements and change management in our key business processes including a high quality, accurate and efficient monthly/quarterly accounting close process to enable the Company to meet its external reporting / SEC filing timelines, while ensuring our internal controls are operating effectively, and our books and records are in compliance with US GAAP.

The Assistant Controller will maintain a focus on continuous improvements and will play a key role in ensuring the accounting function adapts and is able to effectively scale as the Company / business grows, while balancing process efficiency with controls and compliance. S/he will drive cross-functional process improvements and optimize our business processes to enable the Company to scale its operations to support future growth. S/he will have a goal to drive efficiencies in our accounting close and reporting processes, support and optimize other financial and business processes, including procure-to-pay, develop and execute key accounting and financial policies, document procedures and improve processes essential for the business, and ensure our employees are adequately trained and adhere to those financial policies. This individual must be comfortable challenging the status quo, driving change, managing through uncertainty and supporting a high growth fast paced organization.

The successful candidate must have public company experience with a comparable or larger/more complex organization running a quarter-end financial close process and have demonstrated an ability to significantly accelerate the monthly and quarterly close cycles to enable accelerated filing timelines, familiar with implementing SOX controls, and have experience driving cross-functional process improvements, including highly controlled processes such as procure-to-pay and record-to-report processes. This role will partner with Finance and other G&A teams, and business stakeholders to improve all touch points required to ensure an accurate and accelerated close process, and to identify and provide solutions for process challenges.

Here's What You'll Do:

Accounting Close Responsibilities:
  • Drive and ensure the record-to-report process and timeline sufficiently meets our external SEC filing timelines
  • Align, establish and drive monthly and quarterly close schedules, deadlines, and key meetings with internal partners to review and obtain sign-off on financial results and variance analysis
  • Drive and ensure adequate and timely touch points with the business and Technical Accounting team to identify and timely record accruals and other more complex revenue and accounting transactions
  • Drive and ensure monthly and quarterly close schedules and activities are tightly monitored to meet established deadlines
  • Drive and ensure timely reporting of our monthly and quarterly results and related analysis and presentations to senior management and audit committee
  • Establish and maintain strong business partnerships with key counterparts including, FP&A, Procurement, and functional business owners
  • Drive and ensure timely support of our quarterly reviews and the annual audit process with the auditors
  • Possess broad knowledge of accounting concepts, superior analytical skills and knowledge of the biotech industry and related accounting standards, able to develop standards, policies and SOPs for the Accounting organization in support of key business processes within the SOX framework


Operational excellence / process improvements responsibilities:
  • Seeks continuous improvements through identifying and implementing creative solutions to support greater efficiency and effectiveness of processes and procedures, and partnering with our Digital team to leverage functionalities in our key financial systems.
  • Identify and drive/implement new strategies to streamline, simplify and shorten our monthly and quarterly close cycle while maintaining high quality results
  • Collaborate with other finance and business stakeholders to drive cross-functional initiatives, including implementation of accounting-related systems/applications and process improvements
  • Oversee and drive change management to ensure proper execution and training of the process changes/improvements within the Finance team and across the business/Company
  • Responsible for direct supervision and development of a growing accounting team
  • Ability to motivate, lead and teach team members in order to produce high quality materials within tight timeframes while simultaneously managing several projects.
  • Manage, lead / mentor and build a team of 6-8 skilled accountants that can support a quality close process and continuous improvements.


Here's What You'll Bring to the Table:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting required, MBA or Master's degree preferred
  • CPA required, Big 4 public accounting firm experience highly preferred
  • 10+ years of combined public accounting and industry experience of a public company in the biotechnology/pharmaceutical, life science or technology Industries
  • Experience managing and developing an accounting team of a mid-size publicly traded company
  • Strong knowledge of US GAAP, internal controls and managing a corporate financial close and reporting process
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully accelerate a quarter-end close process to meet SEC filings timelines for large accelerated filers
  • Strong knowledge of life science accounting transactions, including collaborations and clinical accruals, and revenue recognition under the new revenue recognition standard (ASC 606), new lease standard (ASC 842)
  • Experience with financial systems including SAP, Blackline, and Concur (or another OCR tool); and Microsoft Suite of products
  • Demonstrated ability to drive continuous process improvements in Finance business processes
  • Proactive, responsive and timely problem solver, pays attention to detail, drives processes and meets deadlines.
