Vermont EPSCoR is recruiting a postdoctoral associate to join our cutting-edge NSF funded research on Basin Resilience to Extreme Events (BREE).  We are continuing a five-year award of large-scale interdisciplinary studies which will determine how the Lake Champlain Basin’s landscape, watershed and lake conditions respond to extreme weather events and will test policy scenarios for enhancing resilience using our comprehensive Integrated Assessment Model (IAM). As a member of the BREE team, you will participate in unique learning and professional development experiences including learning to communicate your science through our program with the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science.

A Post-Doctoral Research Associate position is available in Policy and Social Modeling at the University of Vermont as part of an NSF-funded research project on Lake Champlain Basin Resilience to Extreme Events.   Vermont EPSCoR for its latest Track 1 award is recruiting for a number of positions within the next year to work on a cutting-edge, large-scale, interdisciplinary, NSF-funded study which will determine how the Lake Champlain Basin’s landscape, watershed and lake conditions respond to extreme weather events and will test policy scenarios for enhancing resilience using our comprehensive Integrated Assessment Model (IAM). As a member of the research team, you will participate in unique learning and professional development experiences and have access to significant resources including: Alan Alda Communicating Science workshops; undergraduate mentoring and training;  and over 30 research colleagues spanning numerous disciplines including hydrology, limnology, geology, engineering, environmental resources, economics, public policy and community development.

We seek a post-doctoral associate with demonstrated expertise in policy and social modeling using complex adaptive systems approaches, especially agent based modeling and/or network analysis. The postdoctoral associate will work with interdisciplinary teams of faculty, graduate and undergraduate students, and stakeholders to develop agent based models of alternate policy, governance and social behavioral scenarios in the Lake Champlain basin relative to climate change, extreme events and regional resiliency of social-ecological systems. 

Qualifications include a Ph.D. in Public Policy, Public Administration, Political Science, Geography, Sociology, Computer Science, Environmental Engineering, Natural Resources, or a relevant social or engineering science discipline.  Experience or interest in developing and applying computational complex systems modeling approaches is also desirable.  Proficiency in JAVA programming will be considered a plus.

Individuals selected will be expected to interact substantially across the project. Anticipated start date August 15, 2019. Applications will be considered until the position is filled. Position is funded through May 31, 2021.
